Scientists Regenerate 30,000 yo Plant, Hope To Do Same w/ Mammoth...

    Associated Press/WA Post Article

Pretty wild stuff -- scientists discovered a squirrel's burrow from the Ice Age 125 feet under the ground/perma-frost in Siberia, and it it, they found a bunch of seeds, fruit/vegetable matter, and various types of animal bones and fur (possibly including those from a Wooly Mammoth), all of which are 30,000 years old. From one of the kinds of fruit found in it….

…[A] team of Russian scientists managed to resurrect an entire plant in a pioneering experiment that paves the way for the revival of other species.

The Silene stenophylla is the oldest plant ever to be regenerated, the researchers said, and it is fertile, producing white flowers and viable seeds.

The Russian research team recovered the fruit after investigating dozens of fossil burrows hidden in ice deposits on the right bank of the lower Kolyma River in northeastern Siberia, the sediments dating back 30,000-32,000 years.

“If we are lucky, we can find some frozen squirrel tissue,” Gubin told the AP. “And this path could lead us all the way to mammoth.”

Japanese scientists are already searching in the same area for mammoth remains, but Gubin voiced hope that the Russians will be the first to find some frozen animal tissue that could be used for regeneration.
….Call Steven Spielberg -- this could this be "Jurassic Park: The Ice Age"

What did Jeff Goldblum character say on Jurasic Park?! You were so busy trying figure out whether or not you could, you never stopped to think about whether or not you should. LOL. Good on them all and hope for the best. This technology could possibly mean that more recent extinct animals may not be lost forever.

If this works, they might try the same science on a Betamax VCR.
