WTF? Talk about glomming onto an extremely popular series/film just for hits! First of all, notice that no one quoted mentions anything about HG - it's purely the reporter who adds that bit in. Secondly, if you've actually read the books, there is never any mention of spiked boulders or pits of sharpened sticks. Please.

I've been listening to "Abraham's Daughter" far, far too many times for my own mental health. Also have completely memorized and can sing along to Carolina Chocolate Drops' "Daughter's Lament". I really need to stop.

(But I just bought the PERFECT dress for a showcase to "Abraham's Daughter" if we can just figure out what you could possibly dance to it and it's totally a 'girl on fire' gown....Yeah, I probably need professional help at this point.)

I can get your point because Abraham's daughter is also running back to back with Come away to the Water.
It's very perfect for dance if you ask me. It has that same hypnotic quality you can find with Dead Can Dance work. See ?
With both songs, you could play the canon choreography, like a line starts, and all the others go over it over and over again. Well. I'm gonna stop now.

I'm thinking my teacher will go for it because it could either be a very weak/cheated tango (which I'm good at) or a closer fit to international foxtrot (which it suits well, but at which I suck and therefore need to work on.) Either way it can be really, really over the top dramatic, which NP seems to like with me (when offered a choice of Mary Fahl's soft, pretty waltz "Going Home" or "You Know My Name" from Casino Royale, guess which one he picked?) But the new dress REALLY demands a Hunger Games theme...I think I need to start with twirling.

And I lol'd, as I bought the Official Movie Book and the costumer was talking about Katniss's interview gown and using Swarovski and I was like HAH I KNEW IT.

Plus I was making my band warm up with thirds the other day and the most Hunger-Games-obsessed person in the band started complaining, "Why do we have to do thirds? Thirds are never in anything!"

I have been thinking about districts 1 & 2 training their kids in academies and then have thm volunteer. Isn't it better that way so that they have the bet chance for survival and ensuring that the most volnerable like Prim and Rue are never selected?! BTW... Lionsgate are adapting another young readers series called Chaos Walking but hs latest sees sounds a little too weird for my tastes.

I don't think that the kids not receiving training in the poorer districts was a matter of choice. People living in poverty do not have the luxury of training academies, nor the time for it.

The Chaos Walking series was a lot like the Hunger Games series for me in that the first two books were good, and the everything fell apart in the third book. I couldn't even read it; just skimmed and went to the end.

The bit about the kids from districts 1 and 2 training in special academies is from the film. In the books, it is mentioned that the kids in districts 1, 2 and 4 have been trained all their lives for the Games, hence their nicknames ("careers") but nothing is said about special academies for this.

Oh yeah I remember that now and still say it sounds much better than leaving it to chance. Another teen book being given the movie treatment s Miss Peregine's Home for Peculiar Chidren. Looking forward to ths one.

Not only was it not a matter of choice, it was specifically NOT allowed. The careers districts likely trained for the games because they provided services to the capital that also required those skills (Peacekeepers, for example) or were favorites so it was allowed...

But even when they were going back into the arena Katniss mentions that they aren't supposed to be training before the reaping, but no one cares now.

^ With District 1 it would have had to be allowed due to popularity; I can't imagine what making luxury items had to do with Hunger Games training.

Aside from the economic disparity (lack of training opportunities in the poor districts), having only "trained" tributes compete would completely defeat the purpose of the Games, from the Capital's POV. They instituted the Games to keep the districts permanently in their place, subject to the tyranical control of the Capital. If parents of the most vulnerable children don't live in fear that their kids will be selected, the power over them is greatly diminshed. I'm actually surprised that volunteering, instead of leaving it completely to chance, is even allowed by the Capital at all.

It's too bad that the movie wasn't able to fully illustrate the economic disparities -- both in terms of the hand-to-mouth existance in the poorer districts, and the gamble that youth like Gale and Katniss take by putting themselves up for extra entries for the sake of gaining some comforts for their families. Both aspects are mentioned/shown in passing, but unless you'd already read the book I don't think you'd fully absorb it -- and that's the kind of detail that really makes a dystopia story powerful (and relevant).
