Elena Sokolova's nickname is "Cupcake" on this board as some American commentator called her that once and somehow it stuck.

Patrick' s Chinese name is 伟群(Wei Qun) which sounds like 围裙(Wei Qun, apron) in Chinese.

It can also be interpreted as 偉裙 (Great Apron/Skirt)

LOL Chinese forums use soooooooo many random nicknames / abbreviations that can be difficult to decipher. IIRC people call Plush "Old Artist" or frequently "Plush King" with reasonable reverence, lots more love for Plush compared to Chan. And Liza goes by "junior girl schoolmate" (of Plush) lol. Calling Mao Asada "Cat / Kitten" is what I personally like the best.

I thought it was surreal how Carolina Kostner was called Sister Turkey since the beginning. Only because one of her earlier red costumes resembles a turkey without the meaning of being a Turkey in the western context which complete does not translate in Chinese.

Funny how it sort of self prophasized many times since and especially during the Olympics. Can Sister Turkey defy her name this year at Worlds? Maybe.

My new favourite is Hanyu's: Happy Cow/Ox because the English name just rhymes with the Chinese words, but also it is surprising apt (Ox are simple, stubborn hard working types, they are resilient and hardest working animal in Chinese astrology)

me and my friends love to call skaters with the nicknames. most of them we create from Polish words that sound similar to skaters name. for example:
Mao Asada - Mała Asada (Little Asada)
Evan Lysacek - Evan Lizaczek (Evan The Lollipop)
Brian Joubert - Żubrzyk (Little Wisent)
Evgeni Plushenko - Pluszak (Fluffy Toy)

we also call
Elene Gedevanishvili - Pchełka (The Tiddly Wink)
Irina Slutskaya - Pączek (Donut)
Kiira Korpi - Słodkooka (Sweet Eyed Girl) or Płowowłosa (The Girl with the Flaxen Hair)
sometimes we also call Laura and Kiira "Balladyna and Alina" in relation to famous Polish drama "Balladyna" by Słowacki (it's about two sisters: brunette and fiercy Balladyna and blonde and innocent Alina).

In the times when Denstas and D/L were competiting against each other, and I liked none of the teams, I used to call Marie-France "the stiff one" and Albena "the soft one" (neither of which was supposed to be flattering).

I have to admit, I only give negative nicknames to skaters. When I like them, I just call them by their names.

I also used to call K/N "the bats", after that hideous FD of theirs.

In Chinese, "old" is not a bad word, it is associated with seniority in status and command of respect. The nickname does tease him a bit of his advanced age as a figure skater, but very affectionately so. The lengendary Swedish table tennis player Jan-Ove Waldner is widely nicknamed as the "Old Wa" (老瓦）in China. Again here the ”Old“ is a complement of his evergreen career. (p.s. Waldner is probably one of the most beloved foreign athletes in China). Plushy is also nicknamed as "Plush King" or "The Tsar".

He is one of the rare skater that has received this treatment to my collection, which shows great fondness for him.
