Well, it is an open secret that Matt is gay, but from what I saw in the clip he doesn't actually come out outright. As the article mentions, Jodie Foster publicly thanked her partner in a similar manner and AFAIK she isn't considered openly lesbian.

I guess a lot of people and the media want people to say the words "I am gay" or "I am a lesbian" or whatever will work. I would much prefer to say "I am happily married/partnered and I have 3 wonderful children." It isn't some cold label and it says much more about the person, IMO.
