Also, I don't think anyone mentioned the Percy Jackson and the Olympians and The Heroes of Olympus by Rick Riordan - they are very popular and really good too!

And no one has reiterated my recommendation of the Simon Bloom books by Michael Reisman.

There is a fun stage in your kids life, where they read a book and then hand it to you to read, and then you can talk about it and enjoy it.

And then they move on to awful books like Crank, where drugs and gloom abound, and it's over.
