A rink is allowed to sponsor camps. If you look it up, the one now at your rink has some very high level teachers - led by OGM Alexei Urmanov - and the participating skaters undoubtedly pay quite a bit to participate because that teaching level isn't cheap. These sorts of camps are typically only open to those who are paying those fees. I know it's frustrating but it's perfectly acceptable. If they let everyone in then they're just giving it away and most rinks (not all) are commercial (for profit) businesses like the Newington rink - they make money when they can. The USFSA has nothing to do with camps like that one.

It doesn't matter whether you're a public skater or a competitive skater, FSWer - nobody gets to participate in a camp unless they've signed up and paid for the camp.

The camp at your rink looks like it's intended for higher level skaters, so they wouldn't have let you sign up for it anyway. There are camps or summer programs meant for skaters learning the basic skills, though. You'd have to ask whether your rink ever offers anything like that. You still need to sign up and pay for it, though. It's just like signing up for learn to skate classes, but it's more intense. For learn to skate, you go once a week for maybe 8 weeks. A summer camp might be only 1 week long, but you go every day. It might be a half day or even all day. Usually you skate several sessions, and maybe have some off-ice dance or conditioning classes, too. Rinks won't offer camps unless they think enough skaters will sign up that they can make some money from it.

I think FSWer wanted to watch the skaters, not participate on the ice. At least, that's what it sounds like to me.

FSWer, the camp organizers are responsible for the safety of the campers. There is such a thing as "stranger danger." They don't allow strangers to show up and watch because it makes it difficult to keep the campers safe. There are people who might try to hurt/abduct a skater or take dirty pictures of them. Sounds like the staff were just doing their job of keeping the kids safe.

For the record, even just talking to the skaters is a distraction to them when they're supposed to be working on the camp drills and exercises. It sounds like you were talking to the ones in the lobby and they were kind to speak with you. However, they were supposed to be concentrating on what they pay a lot of money to learn that day, not chatting with strangers. See what I mean?

Rather than wasting time deciding who can/cannot watch, the organizers wisely chose to keep all strangers out of the arena. It wasn't personal - they did it for security and insurance purposes. Since the camp organizers paid the rink for a private rental, they can make that choice. It has nothing to do with the USFSA or ISU. Basically, they were having a private skating event and didn't want spectators. It is their choice.

Oh, of course! I misunderstood. Sorry, FSWer - I jumped to a conclusion because you had mentioned some time ago that you wished you could go to a skating camp.

By "jump into a spin in the air," do you mean how to jump up and turn around?

Try these off-ice first, wearing sneakers. Just stand with your feet about 6-8" apart.
Bend your knees first, then quickly straighten the knees to jump up, bringing your feet close together. Land on both feet and bend your knees/ankles again to regain your balance.

Make sure to practice this in an open area with a soft flooring surface, like an exercise room or a big, carpeted area. That way, if you fall, you won't get hurt. You also don't want anything in the area that you might bump into accidentally, so make sureyou have enough room.

Start with both feet and when that gets easy, jump up and turn around to face the other direction. It'll take some practice, but you'll get it.

Back-Leg-Lifts = I did 30 on my Left,and 50 on my Right.

Stomach-Leg-Lifts = I did 40 on my Left,and 50 on my Right.

Spiral-Leg-Lifts = I held my Legs up in a Spiral for 104 sec. on my Left, and 100 sec. on my Right. LOL,I am still trying to figure out how to get the same hieght with my Legs while just holding my Arms out (like I see Skaters do in my Rinks Lobby). As I do when holding onto a counter. Can anyone help?

Kick-Ups = I did 50 on my Left,and 40 on my Right.

Push-Ups = I did 15.

Back-Ups = I did 100.

Sit-Ups = I did 50.

Sit-Ups = I counted to 100,and touched my toes.

Ok,my fellow Skaters...I didn't have time for a full Off-Ice-Training session on the 7th.(Sorry to be late on this).so I will post his in parts...from the 7th...

Back-Leg-Lifts = I did 70 on my Left,and 80 on my Right.

Stomach-Leg-Lifts = I did 30 on my Left,and 40 on my Right.

Spiral-Leg-Lifts = I held my Spiral on each Leg for 200 sec.!!!!

Kick-Ups = I did 60 on my Left,and held to 100 sec. on my Right.

Part-2 = from 7/5/12

Push-Ups = I did 20

Back-Ups = I did 112.

Sit-Ups = I did 20

Sit-Toe-Touches = I counted to 100 and touched my toes.

Back-Leg-Lifts = I did 40 on each Leg.

Stomach-Leg-Lifts = I did 40 on my Left,and 50 on my Right.

For BOTH Spiral-Leg-Lifts and Kick-Ups = I did 100 on both Legs....I also did 100 Back-Ups.

I did 16 Push-Ups.

Sit-Ups = I did 30.

Sit-Toe-Touches = I counted to 74 and touched my toes.

My Staff dropped me off at the Rink about Noon. I went in and Registered at the Desk,and went into the Rink. I was the only one in there to start. But soon,other Skaters came. I practiced my Gliding. As well as tried 1 Jump (with there being little kids there). I also practiced my 2-Foot-Spin (LOL,I think I'll always be doing a 2-Foot-Spin. Unless I'm lucky,LOL). As I have not been able to figure out how to Spin,get balance,and lift my foot at the same time. I also just discovered today though...that I can Spin BOTH Clockwise and Counter-Clockwise. I'm still trying to figure out how to Spin ina Blur though. LOL. I also watched some Freestyle Skaters after. Please check back here for more.

Ok my fellow Skaters!!!!....Here it is...

I got to the Rink 3min.late. As my Staff was late coming to pick me up. I went in and Registered at the Desk. Because of a goof the last time I went,I didn't need to have a pass marked. So all I needed was more passes. Which I bought later....I then went into the Rink,put on my Skates,and got on the Ice. I practiced a couple of Jumps. As well as my 2-Foot Spin,and Glide-In's. Also...a very nice Freestyler (who I know very well..and haven't seen in about 2 years!! I was so surprised to see her),was even kind enough to offer me a few tips. So I can only say that...BOY!!!...Being taught by a real FREESTYLE SKATER....is like getting a FREE LESSON!!!
