For my Research Methods class we are doing final projects of attitude scales, and my group made a short survey on "Attitudes Toward Same Sex Parents." We want a big, diverse sample and, considering figure skating fans are some of the most open-minded people, in my opinion, I was hoping that a few of you kind FSUniversers wouldn't mind helping me out by taking it. It's about 10-15 minutes. We'd really appreaciate it and, if you guys want, when the data is collected I'll give you the results if you're interested. Thank you for at least considering

Hopefully whatever write-up you do mentions the sampling bias you have (totally non-random sample, made up locations, targeting groups who you think will provide you the results you want.)

If you are able to modify you survey, I suggest changing this question
"51. Gay couples could be bad parents for a son."

I said I strongly agreed- Gay couples could be really really bad parents. Anyone could be a bad parent. Being gay doesn't change that.
If what you meant to say is Gay couples will likely be bad parents for a son, then I strongly disagree.

More likely than who? Children with lesbian parents? Children with straight parents? Then their parents were? Then they are to be gay/lesbian parents themselves?

I had a problem with this question:

I felt like I should say "strongly disagree" because I think the question is getting at whether I think this is true because of the gay parents. However, it is true in that most people are heterosexual so they are indeed more likely to go on to be heterosexual parents as opposed to the implied homosexual parents. It just wasn't clear enough. Skittl pointed out some other errors in wording.

If I don't think it is a problem do I then agree? What if I dont think society should have any issues with it? I am not sure what 'makes of it' means - sorry English is my second language.

English is my first language and this was another question that I didn't understand. The use of "can" is confusing. Because what society makes of it can be a problem, but it might not be. I think 'is' would have been better.

I answered it that I agreed. I don't think it is a problem, but I think society views it negatively, and I think that is a problem.

My other thought was that this was trying to refer to the pornographic setting that many people seem to place all female homosexuality into- straight men love the idea of lesbians, or so the stereotype goes. I think that is a problem (so that goes with my agree) because it objectives the women and makes a mockery of their lifestyle.


(I'm wondering how you answer this if you think female homosexuality is a problem. The statement is set up as though everyone believes the first half. If you "strongly disagree" do you disagree with the notion that what society makes of it is a problem, or that homosexuality is a problem. How will the researcher distinguish? It isn't well worded at all...)

Some questions aren't very clear, as the others already pointed out. I'd suggest always consulting them with your supervisor first.

I agree with what has been said alreayd, but to point out a few more things:

I don't think that homosexuality should be condemned but I would never ever call it "a lifestyle". Because it isn't a lifestyle.

There are two layers to people's indentity. The "lifestyle" layer is things that define us but that are our choice (political affiliation, being a figure skating fan, etc.). Homosexuality, race, ethnic origin, etc. are not a choice.

85. State laws regulating lesbian behavior should be lessened.

Which laws?

The question about it being a good idea to teach a boy to sew, cook, etc. (didn't write the number down).

Well I think it's a good idea to let children express themselves and not impose any ideas of masculinity / femininity onto them so no idea how I should answer that.

93. Lesbians just can't fit into our society.

Well I agree. Because the society doesn't accept them. But it's not what you meant, is it?

Gay can mean male or female homosexuals. I guess you mean gay to indicate male gay couples because those questions came after the lesbian questions but whilst it might be clear to you, it might not be clear to everyone doing the survey.

You're using male and female homosexual later. Those terms should be used in the whole survey to avoid confusion.

I think there are too many questions. It looks like you're trying to find out everything there is about the subject. Whilst great in principle, it might result in no statistical significance because people eventually simply get exhausted and start choosing random answers.

The demographical questions: Do you really need all that information? Are you really going to include all the questions in your statistical analysis? If not, don't include them. People usually are reluctant to give away personal information and it isn't ethical to collect information that you don't really need.

Remember that gender and sex aren't binary, contrary to popular perception. I would always include an "other" option, besides male and female.

Political affiliation. People can have different views on the economic and social dimension (and they often do).
