Anne Frank and Figure Skating

There is an article in today's New York Times. A first cousin recalls Anne Frank's wish to become a figure skater after the war was over:

Thanks for the read. I adore Anne Frank, and reading her diary in my teens had a transformative effect on me.

One can only imagine how she would have been like as a figure skater, but if she could transmit into her skating even a fragment of the soulfulness that was so evident in her writing, Janet Lynn wouldn't have had anything on her.

This is eerie, I was just FBing a friend via private and she was talking about a close relative who is first cousins to Anne Frank. This world is WAY too small. I just found this out, and came on here and read this. Bernard Elias, hmm. I might just pmail my friend again and act like I know all of Anne Frank lineage.

Thanks, I'll have to check that out. This week we saw a live presentation of "The Diary of Anne Frank" @ the Prince Music Theater in Philly. Very moving! Saw the original film (from the late 1950's) many years ago.

Anne even sketched a skating dress that she planned to wear when skating with her cousin Bernd. It was long sleeved, and it had fur-like trim on the cuffs and hem. There was a matching fur-trimmed cap as well. Not sure, but I think the dress was to be blue.

I went to the talk Buddy Elias and his wife did at the 92nd Street Y on Tuesday. They were doing publicity for the book "Treasures From the Attic" and both were most personable and charming. They showed a lot of old family photos, including some of Buddy on skates. He skated with "Holiday on Ice" for 14 years, mainly in comedy numbers. One photo was of Buddy and his partner (didn't catch his real name) dressed as clowns, they called themselves "Buddy and Baddy"

I have that book. It's really interesting if you want to get a more complete background on Anne's family (on her father's side.) Buddy is also a successful actor.

How great that you were able to see/hear him speak. I would love that!
