Eddie Murphy to Host Oscar Broadcast (NOT)

Haven't heard much from him lately. He has to be better than Hathaway and Franco.

Very random. He must have a book or new movie coming out...

He's a relatively recent nominee, he's funny and he pulls in a broader demographic than the usual Oscar audience - how many fit that bill?

I heard on the radio this morning that he's currently working on a project with the director of the Oscar broadcast, so it might not be all that random.

I think somehow we've been transported back to 1988

Hasn't he hosted an awards events before? Was it the Oscar's?

I have a dim memory of him doing a good job with this kind of thing.

According to imdb, he hosted the 1993 MTV awards and also an Emmys show before that. He's been a presenter many times, most recently on the Oscars a couple of years ago.

It's actually probably a good choice - he's funny, he's a known name, he can do live shows, and has the cred of being a recent nominee.

According to Wikipedia, he hosted the MTV move and music video awards in 1993 and 1985 respectively. Extra trivia: Bette Midler and Dan Akryod hosted the 1984 awards. I'm not sure why that surprises me, as I know Bette was pretty big in the '80s. (LOVE her)

I loved Eddie's stand up, even if his more recent movies past Dreamgirls have been ehhhh. I hadn't thought about him in a few years.

Good choice. Murphy's hosting seems solid ... doesn't give one a "ooh, could be great but could be a Lettermanesque trainwreck".

There have been far too many "experiments" over the past ~15 years ... falling flat with too deadpan Letterman, too hateful Whoopi, too smug and referential Jon Stewart, and of course this year's underbaked duo.

Sigh, not everyone can be Billy Crystal, Steve Martin, or Bob Hope.

Or Hugh Jackman, who was a great host!
Still, I wouldn't be upset if Billy Crystal hosted every year.

I miss Billy Crystal. He was the only Oscar host I truly liked.

We will see about EM. He is a funny and talented actor, but can he be a good Oscar host? I hope so, for the sake of the viewers (including me).

Looking back, I thought Bob Hope was awful, with his cornball jokes.

Much better choice than Hathaway or Franco, but anyone would be. It's a bit surprising since we haven't heard much from Murphy for a while, but I'd be interested to see him hosting.

I still think Anne Hathaway partnered with Hugh Jackman rather than James Franco would have been

I liked Billy Crystal at the beginning, but at some point it seemed to become all about Billy. There was his monologue and then long movie parodies with him in each clip. It took forever to get to the awards.

I agree. Hathaway wasn't terrible, just extremely hyper. Jackman would have been a much better partner, but then, pretty much anyone would have been better than James Franco.

I'm not sure this is a good idea. Eddie has done some pretty edgy routines in the past when he did stand-up, and IIRC also has something of a diva reputation. It might get ugly if he wants to do stuff that the producers or writers think is too "out there" for the Oscars....
