Midori Ito wore a black & gold costume for her LP in the 1990 worlds. She won the silver.

    I think it is a post-Worlds cheesefest.

ETA, in Binghampton, I love this program and her spiral and Peter C's barely audible "wow" during same.

This was her 2001 COI exhibition program. IIRC she held out the spiral til the end instead of doing the deathdrop in shows.

So, is a gold costume a curse?

One of my favorite parts of the whole thing! That was evidence of how caught up in the performance he was. When she hit that spiral...you just get chills, and his came out in the form of a spellbound "Wow..."

    I love it!

ETA: If you've never listen to any of Linda Eder's music (the woman who sang the song in this ex) you really should check her out. Her voice is insanely incredible!

I'm glad this topic was started because I have thought about this before. Remembering Nancy's dress, and Michelle's exhibition. I think when the skaters wear gold they curse themselves. I preferred Sasha's gold dress from nationals to the red one she wore at Olympics, but she said she changed the color because the gold made her look "washed out" on the ice. I thought it was more flattering on her than the red. But this is another gold curse dress. I used to think you could tell the placement of a skater by the color of their dress and a lot of times I was right. MK's blue/silver dress from 98 matched her medal.

you should state in your statement No OGM medal.

no no gold medal, that implies no winning in anything at all.
cause most people won worlds, nationals or something.

I may have missed a post that mentioned this-

Brian Orser wore a red & gold costume for his LP at the 1988 Olympics in Calgary. He won the silver.

This lady would have said that the silver dress her mother insisted she wear did not help her chances for Gold:

Maybe the skaters should just wear silver colored dresses and that way they will cross-jinxify themselves and at the same time be prepared for the worst.

I remember Evan gave a interview where he mentioned that green is bad luck, purple is bad luck unless you're royalty, while wearing gold you won't get it, and while wearing silver that's all you'll get. There's also the belief that blue is the ladies OGM colour.

Those are all Frank's rules. I've heard these all before, except the purple. They seem to be decently well-spread superstitions in the figure skating world.

    Let us test this:

    2010 Yu na- blue
    2006 Shizuka- blue
    2002 Sarah- blue
    1998 Tara- blue

1994 Oksana- pink (not sure who wore blue)

    1992 Kristi- black & gold/yellow

    1988 Katarina- red

    1984- Katarina- pink/red

Looks like the blues trend is fairly recent.

M Kwan never wore gold to compete in until 2005. Her exhibition dresses don't count.

^ That's true Vash01, but I remember both Shizuka and Yu na stating they picked blue dresses for their Olympic year long programs specifically for this reason. So even though the trend was only 2 skaters deep for Shizuka, she was still aware of it. Honestly with all these superstitions, is it any wonder that dresses are usually only blue/red/black?

Jill Trenary wore gold for her original program at the 1990 World Championships, placing 5th in that segment. She still won the overall gold medal thanks in part to a 2nd place finish in the long program.

I remember an interview with Cecilia where she all but said Sonja's wealthy father had posters plastered all over town stating Henie would win the gold at the Olympics (or something to that effect). Colledge was close to Henie after the figures competition but she seemed to feel politics helped Sonja win the day. Cecilia I think was the first woman (well she was just a girl then) to perform a double jump at the Olympics.

OT but it seems fascinating that the skating dresses of Colledge and Henie in the '30's were so Hollywood flashy but by the 1950's skaters's dresses seemed rather plain in comparison! Usually just one solid color with maybe a tiny bit of decoration around the neckline. I read somewhere a long time ago that it was Linda Fratianne who started to bring back the bling in skating dresses by the '80s.

Katarina wore blue in '88 for her OP:

Don't know if this was mentioned before but Kurt wore a costume with a belt and collar. The costume had some goldish/brownish/orangey tones in his OP in '92:
