How is it given the sheer gorgeousness of their ice skaters, Finland doesn't win every year? Maybe they should stuff Kiira's bra and enter her.

I guess “yes” and “no”… contestants do give cookie-cutter politically correct answers, and some are close to “world peace for all”.

My point was (not directed at you but on the comments I’ve read)… is that I don’t believe a beauty pageant should be a platform for social justice and social engineering.

If one country can afford a better costume than another – no big deal! It’s a not life and death situation.
Japan and USA have hundreds skating rings - Georgia has one. COP and judges don't reward Gedevaneshvilli with extra points.... (at least not yet).

If a contestant is too thin – no big deal. The girls who are not “so thin” should be happy they are healthier and have better bodies. A beauty pageant should not be held accountable for others’ insecurities or short-comings.

I don’t like the idea that the same country can’t win 2x in a row.. Venezuela does have some of the most beautiful women in the world, and the probability of them winning is higher.

I don’t like a trend of making sure that each year’s a winner is from a different country. Then why should a country which won the year before even bother to send a contestant?

A winner should be determined on merit, and not by social engineering. Otherwise why hold a competition?

A contest is a CONTEST, not a Noah’s Ark, where we must place “a pair of every kind”. If a country does not ever win a beauty pageant - its economy will not colapse..... The economies will colapese when "a pair of every kind" start to expect "a pair of everything".

Some of the costumes are stunning!

    Miss Panama's is mesmerizing.

    And then there's Miss Tanzania
Oh, no, I'm totally okay with you making the semifinals when I didn't. Now, come here, and let me give you a BIG hug!

I could see Johnny Weir in Curacao's costume.

    Finland didn't even try.

Haven't got through them all yet but Miss Croatia looks like a 1950's diner waitress and Miss Denmark looks like the good witch of the north.

I cannot believe Puerto Rico's costume! Is she trying to be a coquí?

For those of you who don't know, a coquí is basically our national animal, and it's a little tree frog.

    Can't believe it.

My favorite costume has to be Singapore's.

    And I think Peru's beautiful.

I clicked through the costumes the other day and liked the one that looked like a blue fairy or dragon, was it Venezuela?

So, Miss Hungary is a vampire hooker?

Lots of birds represented. And better fascinators than any royal wedding!

Ukraine's got balls to wear that thing.

Not so sure. Puerto Rico is in the top 5 for ALL of the pageant sites (Global Beauties, Missosology, Critical Beauty). That said, my favorites remains PERU, CHINA or GREECE, not Pto Rico....but it's a big deal in our household whenever Pto Rico wins...which seems to happen every 5 yrs or so.

THE FINALS ARE TONIGHT!!! Folks who get NBC's Spanish-lanuage affiliate, Telemundo, can see a one-hour pre-show called "Camino a la Corona" ("Road to the Crown") at 8pm ET, immediately followed by the 2-hr telecast, in English on NBC or in Spanish on Telemundo.

It's supposed to be a "vegigante" - the headpiece is similar to that worn by merry-makers in Puerto Rico's own carnivals...but the part below the neck doesn't look like vegigante at all. I don't know what the heck it has to do wiht carnaval.

I just read that tonight's telecast will include a costume portion. The top 15 costumes will be shown (video clips), followed by the announcement of the Best Costume trophy, selected by a local panel of fashion experts.

I'm rooting for Romania's vampire get-up with blood-stained shirt. Or Curacao's "funky chicken."

That's what I was told by my co-workers. I told them it didn't look like a vegigante at all. But then they showed me a page ad in the local newspaper (Nuevo Dia) and I see it more.

I'm sure that there will be other links but here are a couple of live online-feed paths:

    http://live.missosology.org

    http://thejlublog.com/2011/09/watch-miss-universe-live/

The finals commence at 9pm ET (just as with skating, NBC is making the poor Pacific Coast wait 3 hours after the fact, so California can't see live on TV). It might be good to consult a time-zone converter for exact beginning time where you live, e.g., http://www.timezoneconverter.com/cgi-bin/tzc.tzc
