I saw a video clip of a dog suddenly dashing out of the room and then the shaking started about five seconds later. I always thought cats anticipated quakes but did not know dogs did this as well.

My cousin, who just moved to Virginia, said her dog went crazy before she felt any shaking. I wonder if they can hear something we can't or just feel it coming...

You can definitely hear an earthquake coming. My first 4.0 earthquake was during my first week at college and it sounded like a freight train. I managed to think, "Huh, I don't recall there being any train tracks close by..." before the building starting to shake. Dogs have better hearing that we do, so that may be part of it...

Though some of the apes at the National Zoo also react pre-earthquake as well. Here's an entertaining rundown: http://nationalzoo.si.edu/Publicatio...earthquake.cfm

Read all the way to the end.
