I'm in Manhattan and thought my couch was trembling under my butt. I didn't realize it was an earthquake until I saw all the Facebook activity.

Slightly nervous that the epicenter was in Richmond. My niece goes to college at the University of Richmond. She is probably okay but I'll probably call her to make sure!

Any earthquake when one isn't used to them is bound to be super scary. Add to the fact that although 5.9 isn't huge in the grand scheme of things, it's big enough to cause concern about buildings that weren't built to withstand earthquakes.

FoxNews seems to only be interested in talking about how terrifying this must have been for those who were there for 9/11 I get it, but does it need to be mentioned over and over? I think they would prefer we know 9/11 is coming up rather than knowing the details of the earthquake. You can hear them just trying so hard to find a dramatic story.

I felt it in Yonkers. I didn't realize it was an earthquake at the time, though. They are doing work on the exterior of our building and I thought they were drilling or some such.

Actually, 9/11 was going through my mind a lot when I was being herded down the stairs with the rest of the people in my office building. I was quite relieved when someone said it was an earthquake.

Felt it in DC. My whole house was shaking. Terrified me and the dogs. Originally thought it was a bomb. Crazy summer - new baby and now an earhquake.

I'm from the west coast and have been in earthquakes before, but nothing this strong. And apparently we may have a hurricane to look forward to this weekend as well?

Had to evacuate my building in Dupont Circle; everyone in the area just started hanging about in the streets (which I find rather unsafe to stand next to a shaking building, but whatever).

I heard the Washington Monument has gone all Tower of Pisa
Sometimes I think I lost something really important to me, and it turns out I already ate it.

I thought it was construction and then when I heard something...separate...in the walls realized what it was. My staff were dumbfounded, I knew it was an earthquake because there was one in Philly in 1973 (!)

They just let us back in the building after inspecting for damages, apparently some higher floors had some broken windows.

    Very, very weird.

I felt it in the semi-lower Hudson Valley (60 miles NW from NYC). My computer monitor shook a little and then my chair did, and I thought maybe my cat was behind the chair, stretching and scratching. I even turned around to look.

I had a Cleveland Indians baseball game on, and the broadcasters felt it. They said earthquake and I immediately went to Google to see what was going on.

Meanwhile I'm not getting any work done because my friends keep calling. We don't get a lot of earthquake action around here.

In downtown Richmond, VA on the 15th floor - shaking lasted 15-20 seconds. Got outside via stairs - cabby outside said he could see our building swaying.

Centered about 40 miles NW of us. Possibility of aftershocks (not the poster) soon. Facebook went crazy - cell and phone service tied up.

I'm having a difficult time concentrating because I keep waiting for an aftershock. Ugh.

They said on the news people in the Pentagon were being evacuated...I would guess that would be one of the safest places be. I hope everyone is ok. Earthquakes are scary.

Wow, Shep Smith is handing out a giant dose of the truth on Fox News. Telling everyone to calm down and that everything being done (shutting down buildings) is for precautionary reasons. Not one single report of an injury. I think this is mostly directed at his own colleague who has been doing her best to scare the shit out of everyone watching. lmao

Suburban Maryland checking in... there was a small pre-shock which I thought was related to the construction going on in our building's garage... then the full quake hit. Had to go outside for a while, which was actually nice because it's such a beautiful day.

Oh yeah we felt it here at home. I live in VA just outside of DC. I thought my son was doing something weird with his bass amp because the whole house was moving. Nothing broke tho'. Hopefully this wasn't a foreshock. There's been no aftershocks so far.

Good of one of "our" people to buck the trend. God, I am really beginning to despise all kinds of corporate media.

ETA - possibility of aftershocks approximately 45 minutes after quake were noted. That time has passed but we're still being alert (how can you not be)?
