The most upsetting thing in all of this isn't the dance teacher, although she is a bitch to th nth degree. My problem is with the mothers who have deluded themselves into believing that the degradation of their daughters is a necessary trade-off for their own personal failures and shortcomings. I understand wanting success for your children, but not at the expense of their mental/physical well-being. And in-fighting among the mothers perpetuates all of this. The mother of the child who is the "best" has a tilted view of the world, really believing that her kid is "better" than the others. And the mothers clamoring for their kids to be in that position is sick.

You want your children to have what you did not but forcing them to participate in an activity you missed out is not about the child at all. When I heard Chloe's (?) mom going on about that I thought she really believed she was doing what was best for her daughter. Deluded indeed.

What are these moms teaching their children about self-respect and respect for others? These mothers are more scared of the techer than the kids are! And they're paying her!?! Seriously?!?!

Well, look on the bright side--the moms on this show make the moms on "Toddlers and Tiaras" and "Little Miss Perfect" look positively sane.

ok, I gave in and watched an episode on hulu. these people have to be acting this way on purpose, right? there's no way that the new mom would continue to be so "oh, you mean no one will help me with the luggage? No one will sew the costumes? I have to ride on a stinky bus?". The whole leaving one set of luggage on the pavement until after everyone is on board and ready to go was completely scripted.

I feel sorry for the kids.

I also looked up the website for this Abby Lee person and it is a nightmare of epic proportions. An abomination of website design. It reminds me of a bottle of Dr Bronner's Castile Soap, with all the random crazy saying written every which way I did eventually find a page with info about staff, and Abby is listed as "Director, Choreographer, Instructor" while all the other teachers list what classes they teach. I think Abby does not teach any dance classes, she drives the organization, creates the crappy dances, and probably does some one-on-one coaching for the dancers in the company. All in all - ICK.
Q: Why can't I read the competition threads?

I read on another website that Abby Lee's main qualification for teaching dance was.....her mother was the first owner of the dance school.

I also notice that the horrific website goes on and on about the hundreds of successful professional dancers the school has produced, but seems to have overlooked actually saying who any of them are or naming any of the shows or events they have been part of.

That really irked me: My dance teacher died this year (she was 88) but had a short history on Broadway and dancing for soldiers in the USO before moving with her husband and starting her own school. She was able to show us the steps herself and project authority without raising her voice or pitting one girl against the other. Most of all she was so good at finding something positive to say about every participant. Her glass was always half full. I took tap from her for 10 years and truly enjoyed it. I see these girls on this show and most of them look like they would rather be elsewhere. I see Abby Lee as a menace and the mothers are her enablers.

I certainly hope this is largely scripted and exaggerated for tv, otherwise I'd feel bad at laughing out loud at their disturbing Electricity number.

No, not this school on the show, I should have said "a" school in CA. I'm just wondering if the producers of this "reality" show got the idea from seeing how crazy people went over that video and went out and found a wacky school to stage it at.

After watching this, I want to hug my daughter's dance teachers.

the choreography definitely isn't just for the show - it's typical of competition studios

I'm watching the first episode. I cannot believe this woman actually has any students at all!! And she thinks having just two groups in a competition is "hectic" and "stressfull"????

How about what my two dance teachers deal with at dance/talent competitions? One acro group, one each of child, youth and teen dance groups, and countless solo, duet and small-group numbers. And they always go to the national competitions, and have been for years! Their school has also been in business since 1953, and I guarantee you that none of their thousands of former dancers, acrobats and baton twirlers (including yours truly) who've reached the upper levels of instruction and competition roll their eyes that those two womens' backs.

Abby Lee is a fecking joke and a half, and a disgrace to the dance world, and to the teaching profession.

other than the color, pretty identical.

I'd forgotten about that video. more evidence that the show is scripted - there's no way Abby Lee would not know about the similarities to the other dance, and considering all the warnings on her atrocious site about people claiming to be affiliated with her who aren't, etc, I can't see she'd do such a blatant and easily discovered ripoff if it hasn't been written for her.

    .
Not to mention...what, six kids in one group, three (of the same) in another? I hope there were more that just aren't being filmed, or really? That's a lot of money to waste going that far for such a dinky team.

Yeah, unless the comp is really far away, the good studios usually bring a group of under 10s, a tween group, and their seniors. That's at least 24 people who might regroup for duos and trios. The last year my niece competed, there were over 50 kids from her studio who routinely traveled to comps in the Northeast.

I'd guess that you only get to see the kids whose famewhore moms allowed them to be filmed

I'm also wondering about the claim - repeated by diva teacher Abby Lee - that her former students have gone on to have decent careers in dance.

    Also:
The school doesn't come off very well in the scene where she puts an unprepared, unschooled child (the very little girl with long dark hair) on the competition team merely because the mother's got $$$$.

(Not sure if she's doing it to subsidize the school's bills, or to fund scholarships for more talented dancers...but it's a pretty candid admission that she's happy to take money from anyone. Not just the best of the best.)

I'm just at her making these girls do a different routine every week for competition. I attended a "competition studio" for 12 years myself (although I competed in baton contests for 6 years, which is a whole 'nother thing entirely), and my understanding of talent contest "Nationals" was that you qualified at a regional competition first, and then went to the national finals. And you used the same routine in a given year for whatever group was going to compete. You didn't do one number at one comp. and then something different at the next comp.
