Skatecast #49: interview with Tim Goebel

The latest episode of my podcasts is up! Timothy Goebel of course was the 2001 US National Champion, 2x World Silver Medalist and 2002 Olympic Bronze Medalist. But he is perhaps best known for his skills with the quadruple jump, landing an amazing career total of 76 quads, and being the first to land three in one program (a feat that has not often been repeated).

We talk about all the above, plus his experience being a Technical Specalist.

He also is sending me some signed posters/photos to giveaway, and you have until July 31st to enter to win.

Listen at my website or on iTunes (once iTunes picks up the feed)

And because I'm giving birth in a few weeks , I'm putting up the next podcast with David Kirby very shortly. Look for that soon.

    Thanks all!
In my spare time, I like to interview figure skating legends.

Yay, sounds great. I'll be very interested to hear his comments from being on the other side as a tech specialist, and especially after a frustrating attempt to make the 2006 Olympic team (which I think was probably one of the few times he competed under IJS).

Hope all goes well with the delivery!!

Congrats! If it's a girl, you should name her Elizabeth.

Soy, the reason why she should name her daughter Elizabeth is because of Elizabeth Manley (Olympic Silver Medalist in Single Skating)

Good interview. His phrasing of what happened in Vancouver was spot on ! Men with the potential for doing quads were not doing them because the system was so brutal in punishing failure on quads that it was not worth trying and how that was very bad for the sport. Failure was catastrophic. You could jump and rotate +3 times but if you fell ZERO points. No credit for anythng. A quad at the Olympics? Dumbest thing you could do in skating.

COP 101 was all about 3 jumps in the first half and 5 jumps afte the second half. All triples no quads. You had 2 world champions and then in 2009-2010 Oda stopped doing all quads and was the 3/5 triple program. Forget about short program quads. That was dumber than and LP quad.

I don't remember Goebel saying Lysacek doing the right thing under the wrong circumstances at the time. That the parameters were all off. He says he saw Lysacek doing quads all time and he was part of that not doing quads for COP reasons. Though Lysacek was talking about injuries being the reason.

I don't agree with judging Plushenko by taking the quad triple out of his program because than Goebel says -and they all say- doing a program with a quad and one without are not comparable in any way.

Interesting how Tim hemmed and hummed and really didn't answer the question when Allison asked him about Frank Carroll letting him go.

I did. And for those of you who didn't, I've been old I look like an amalgam of Jodie Foster and Tatum O'Neil.

Wasn't it? Couldn't really get a straight answer.

I was out of the loop for some years on everything figure skating so.....
what are people's perceptions on why Goebel was let go by Frank Carroll?
