Does Freddie Mercury count? Though born in Tanzania, his family was originally from India? I lurved me some Queen back in the day.

About Tatyana Ali...is this the same actress who played Ashley on the Fresh Prince of Bel Air? I didn't realize she was also a musician.

Just read about Mercury at wikipedia and now I'm more confused than before. So I'm not sure if his heritage goes back to India or Iran...

That's her. She only released one CD, which went gold and had two top ten pop songs. Not sure why she didn't realize more CD's...

Tatyana Ali - Daydreamin (video features Antonio Sabato Jr.)

Tatyana Ali - Kiss The Sky

I voted for Eddie, but I thought he was Dutch?

There was a Japanese hair metal band called Loudness. They were awesome.

His mom is Dutch, and half Indonesian, which used to be a Dutch colony. His dad is Dutch.

The Indian media usually treated him as the first Indian rock star in the West, so I think that counts.

I've been thinking a long time about how there are so many major music stars of African or Hispanic heritage, but so few of Chinese or Japanese heritage (at least in North America, anyway). So I was going to make a poll that would have only four poll options to highlight this. But as I googled and wiki'ed, I realized that a "Chinese/Japanese" poll didn't make sense, so went with the broader Asian artist poll. And kept finding more and more to add to the list and came up with a decent poll after all. But I'm still shocked that there aren't more pop stars in North America of Chinese or Japanese ancestry...

I've never heard of her before! I wiki'ed her and it looks like while she's done really well in other markets of the world, it appears none of her CD's have been released in North America. Maybe she's just not pretty enough.

In order to make it to the poll, the act had to have sold an album or single to someone other than their immediate family.

I'd vote for David Usher but he's not on the poll. His mom is Thai...

Actually- her "Snow on the Sahara" album was released in the USA and had moderate sales. But the title song WAS the first single from an artist from Asia to chart on the billboard charts.

Yeah, she was just too ugly for NA markets.
