The brilliant, irreplaceable, legendary John Curry skated the end of his 1974 LP to Bolero

If Chan skates to Bolero sometime, I think he will do wonders.

Interesting, thanks for posting the links. Didn't recall that so many skaters performed to Bolero. From what I've seen, my faves would be: Torvill and Dean; Scott Williams ; Urmanov (he was easily a better all-around skater than Plushy and Yags, IMHO -- too bad Urmanov was blamed for winning gold at '94 Olympics, and his career seemed to suffer); and Sasha Abt (wow, that costume -- pre Johnny Weir)!

I LOVE that costume though. One of my favourites. But can anyone explain the dragon to me? Or is it kinda like how Ilia wore giraffe print with RiB (you know, don't ask)?

Yes, it was Latino Bolero, but Ravel's piece was the basis.
Elena Liashenko used the same version of Bolero one or two seasons before K/N...

Todd E. skated to Bolero in SOI for the 20th Anniversary show tour (as a tribute to T&D).

Chait & Sakhnosky (sp.?) in 2006 Olympics. Dick Button had a lot to say about their program (and costume comments), IIRC.

Have you guys heard this version? Even though many think it's a little taboo for any skater to skate to Bolero I so want to see the likes of Kiira or Alissa skate to this version.

I guess the hard thing for a lot of people to accept is why God would allow me to go running through their yards, yelling and spinning around.

You can search on www.skatemusiclist.com for a listing of who skated competitive programs to Bolero. Here are some of the entries I found:

    Bolero (Ravel) -
Jayne Torvill & Christopher Dean (Great Britain) 1984 Olympics Free Dance
Jayne Torvill & Christopher Dean (Great Britain) 1984 World Championships Free Dance
Alexei Urmanov (Russia) 1992 World Championships
Scott Williams (USA) 1993 Miko Masters Long
Jayne Torvill & Christopher Dean (Great Britain) 1994 Artistry of Torvill and Dean Exhibition
Olga Markova (Russia) 1997 Skate Canada Short

There are more listings under the pro comps heading as well. Unfortunately it looks like this website does not contain listings after 2008.

Torvill and Dean is synonymous with Bolero - growing up in Britain, it would almost be blasphemous to consider anyone else able to bring it justice.

However I do hope one day someone would. It is a great piece of music for soloist/singles skater as well. Bolero is a piece of music that has a degree of harmonious machismo but not overwhelming so. It is about building tensions that are deliberately paced therefore excellent for artistic interpretations.

For some reason I thought it would be an excellent piece of music for Hanyu Yuzuru for a long program.

His biggest weakness has always been his agility (due to age therefore his built), but he has an effortless musicality and interpretation to his movements, therefore the slow paced tempo in the beginning would be ideal for him where he get to display his nuanced flair, which are balances of lyrical, grace and handsome qualities without tiring himself out. As he approaches the heightened rhythmic chords, he can be quite compelling to watch, as he have demonstrated a little bit last season.

Belonging to the next generation of skaters, with a big gap of 25+ years, maybe it is time judges should able to see his performance a fresher approach (Being Asian helps?), rather than bogged down by the strong impression of the Torvill and Dean legendary version.

My favorite performance to this music is the COI cast's finale to it. I'm thinking it was the summer of 2004, the year they had a 2nd tour with a reduced amount of skaters. The lights were lowered & the cast were all in shades of blue. It had almost a dream-like quality to it. It was just beautiful.

Oh, thanks for reminding me of this! Definitely my favorite COI finale. I think it was during the 2000 Summer tour (back in the days when one of tour stops was shown on one of the cable channels). There was a neat segment in which they showed the rehearsals for "Bolero" and the finished product. I wish someone would/could put that segment up on Youtube.

Definitely not 2000, I didn't go to COI that year. I have the cast photo somewhere around here & they were all in their blue costumes.

    As do I!

It was a three hour telecast.
I was out-of town and couldn't record it.

ETA: It was 2000 COI; shown on TNT in the US.
    I just checked,

Well then, I did go to COI that year because I definitely saw it in person. And that means it was done by a full cast. The small cast that did a 2nd tour was in 2004....I looked it up. That's the one that headlined Michelle, Dorothy, & Nancy.

So there are two separate performances of Bolero as a COI finale. Well, would someone please post it on Youtube? For this I'd (and some others) be eternally grateful.

paskatefan, my memory is so bad. I did see Bolero apparently in 2000 & I did attend the 2004 COI but I can't be sure they also did Bolero. Now that I think of it, in 2004 with the smaller cast they did something that featured everyone more individually in the group skate. By the way, that smaller tour was never televised.

Skaters you might recognize include Tom Dickson, Catarina Lindgren and Priscilla Hill.
