....not really a triple triple, but I think she tried a double lutz-triple toe at Skate America in 1996. It was in the short program and likely intended to be a triple lutz-double toe. I'm not sure if she practiced other triple-triples.

Wow, never knew she landed triple axel. She wasn't the best jumper out there and I'm surprised she tried such a difficult jump. According to commentators she intended to land triple lutz-triple toe at Sparkassen Cup 2001 but didn't manage to throw another jump after lutz because of bad landing. Maybe she tried that at Trophee Lalique 2001 but I don't have the video.

Maria was not the greatest jumper in history, but her landing positions were defenitely a beauty!

I will make it after I finish one with Tara Lipinski's combos . Btw, I wonder what is more difficult, 3toe/half loop/3sal or 3sal/3toe?

I definately think the 3t-1/2lo-3s is probably more difficult. It is really difficult to maintain the flow and momentum after doing the 1/2lo. I noticed that she never really held the landing after the 3toe which didn't give a nice edge to the 1/2lo. I would be interested is seeing what Rochette did if you are going to make a clip of that.

oh my god, please, her landing was at the very best just OK. If your definition of beautiful landing is stiff landing and ugly position, then you would make a wonderful technical specialist for speady.

IMO, Surya Bonaly owns the 3Toe/half-loop/3Sal. But anyway, that was good from Maria to attempt it. Even if I've never liked her Salchow, forced with her arms.

I also think 3T/half-loop/3S is more difficult than 3S/3T. Because it's easier to rebond by using the speed of the 3S. But that's just my opinion since I will never attempt this combo !

Commentators occasionally suggested that Maria would try a triple lutz - triple toe in the SP but I've never seen her attempt one. IMO, the 3toe 1/2 loop 3 salchow was a good choice for her as she often had trouble on the landings of her triples and even following with the double toe was not as easy. The extra half loop gave her a chance to obtain a good take-off edge for her salchow - and some of the sequences in the video are done very nicely! Thanks for compiling these videos!

And I remember french commentators talking about her attempting 3Flip/3Toe and 3Axel at practices ! I've never seen that, and I don't know if that was true.

Maria was always one of my fave's but SO many errors really cost her a lot of gold medals.
Check out her Euro 1998 freeskate & NHK Trophy 2000 freeskate. She was fantastic there.
And my fave women's short programme ever the 2000 World's in Nice.
A classic.

Thanks for posting that one. I just love that program. That combination was really good though. It had much better flow than Maria's and was more effortless.

I suppose to get onto the 1/2lo you have to cut the landing edge short on the landing of the 3t. Joannie's looked a lot more controlled than Maria's.

Medals maybe but gold medals. These are the only events I can think of where Maria could have possibly won gold without her errors:

2000 Worlds
2001 Europeans (maybe)
1999 Grand Prix final
1998 Nations Cup or Lalique (forget which one, but the one Sokolova won)
1997 Skate Canada (maybe, only since Kwan had some major errors as she wasnt even a remote rival otherwise back then)

And that is all unless you have any other suggestions. Hardly alot in the grand scheme of things of her long career. Maria was a good better edge jumper than toe jumper, her 3loop was her best jump, and her salchow was always very high and full of air, I'm not surprised she went for the 3thalf loop 3 sal combo, instead of a 3t3t or 3z3t. Her lutz was nice when landed, but she almost always had some trouble with the flip.

I can't recall her ever try a 3z3t in practices or competitions I have seen her in, but of course, that's just a few.

Her landing knee was always very stiff and it caused her a lot of trouble, but she was a lovely skater, and she really pushed her technical content at a high age, adding a second 3z to her programs (not always landed though) and the 3,3 sequence.

She was such a headcase with Kudriatsev, I remember 95 euros when she totally fell apart. When she switched to Tchaikovskaya, it was like something fell into place, they seemed like such a good match. Marias Otonal will forever be one of my favourites, when she won in Helsinki I was in tears, she really gave everything for that victory, no holding back.

At the 2000 Europeans she took herself out of it in the short program, but her long program was one of her best ever and Slutskaya skated cautiously with no triple-triple attempt and still drubbed her. She was never winning there, since Irina was clearly the panels favorite. If she had done that same long program at Worlds that year she would have won however.

Worlds in 2001? She skated a clean short program and the judges still put her only 5th, which ended up costing her the bronze even with bombing the Q round. She would have still gotten the bronze atleast if she skated better in the Q round, but it doesnt seem the judges considered her a serious threat for gold at that point. Maybe going into the 2001 Grand Prix final she still was.
