I'll be reading this with interest, myself. I have a trip planned in the future and am looking at a Rhine River cruise and a day trip to Heidelberg among other things.
Am I there yet?

Heidelberg is worth the trip - the trains are excellent in terms of getting around.
Gothe's house is interesting to see and it is right downtown.
Rhine River tour - excellent choice, lots of castles but the wine...........not my favorite.

30 minute local train ride - town/city of Mainz - simply charming!
