    Oh god, nooooo.

Another UK songstress that I think is blowing up is Jessie J. Mamma Knows Best Craaazy vocals and I love her songwriting.

The thing is, Gaga IS talented. She's got a great voice, can play a ton of instruments and can dance well, and most importantly she can entertain.

Unfortunately all of that is overshadowed by her image.

OMG. If "Born this way" made me just go back and listen to old Madonna songs, this one just made me shut off the player completely! urghhhh... I could not even get to finish it...
I had quite a bit of her first songs on my gym iPod, but none of the latest stuff is even remotely my cup of tea. (which, considering who I am talking about, might be not the best phrase ever)

I don't mind her or her singing. I also like Julia Roberts. Haven't heard her sing though.

It's hard to define what is "great" though. Gaga can carry a tune but so can entertainers like Cher, Katy Perry, etc. I don't think I've heard enough versatility in her voice to know if she has a great voice or not. And no, I don't consider Gaga singing with just the piano demontrates that her voice is exceptional.

can play a ton of instruments
I've only seen her on the piano. Maybe she also play that triangle thingy

    and can dance well
Ok, I'll give her that, or at least she can keep up with the choreography.

That was her choice, wasn't it? I think many people don't know she's talented and those who did have already forgotten, or don't give a crap anymore because the shit she's been doing is ridiculous.

Her image is ridiculous. It looks so calculated, cheap and genuinely crazy at times. Not in a good sense, either. More like, "She's having mental problems and needs help." She looks unwashed and it doesn't help that she goes everywhere half naked. Once I saw pictures of her getting escorted at an airport. I can only imagine what the police escorting her were thinking about her almost bare ass in public and those inane shoes that make her look like a centaur. Probably thought she was idiot.

Katy Perry can carry a tune? Maybe an autotune.

    I think she can
And Gaga can sing as well. There's a vid of "Speechless" live that blew me away.

Reading everything above, I guess it's just par for the course, but Lady Gaga is getting bigger so it's natural that more fans and critics [real and armchair] alike will come at her from all directions. It's part of notoriety. I saw this exact script written during the '80s as a teen w/ Madonna, complete with and . I can't tell you how many times I heard 'so-and-so is a waaaay better singer or musician than Madonna'. But, now people reflect on her fondly..........mostly

And I don't think they're similar, except the ways in which they are achieving notoriety.

I'm surprised that no one has compared Lady Gaga to this lady:

I think Lady Gaga is definitely talented, but I don't think my problem with her is so much her image, but that her image is used to distract from such boring, run-of-the-mill pop music. If her music was as daring as her costumes, then I'd be all good with her.

Well, I think she is as much a visual artist (or at least her team is) and fashion icon as she is a pop musician. I don't think they're necessarily exclusive. Most pop acts need to dress their part.

Because they have no talent. Not what I call talent, Miss Lady Gaga!!

(Oops, got stuck in the monologue before "Rose's Turn" from "Gypsy").

Speaking of "Gypsy", "You Gotta Have a Gimmick" (and AutoTune) certainly comes to my mind when I think of most pop singers today.

OT (or maybe not): Next Saturday night is the 50th anniversary of perhaps the seminal live solo concert in pop music history - that of Miss Judy Garland at Carnegie Hall. Let's see any of today's divas (or even the vast majority of yesterday's) even come close to that performance.

Different audience. Judy was out to attract the adult audience. Current singers are out for the tween/teen market, where all the extra money is hiding. All you need is a boring beat, mediocre music and childishly regressed costumes that make the tweens/teens think you are so daring. The Madonna, Christina, GaGa etc acts are about as daring and novel as is the average two year old who loves to rip off his clothes and run through the living room naked.

I heard that Judas song on the radio tonight. This is what I'd like to know....if the chick has so much singing talent, then WHY do they bury her vocals? I can't ever understand the lyrics in her songs. I heard Adele right after Gaga and BAM, there were her vocals, front and center.

And what's more, if she is in charge of her own production and decides what kind of sound she wants to make, why not lead her "little monsters" along to something different from, and better than, the rest of the pop shite that's played now?

Who is to say her album wont have songs that you all consider good pop music? Remember, we have only heard 2 singles. Singles are the songs picked from the album most likely to get radio play. You have to put something out there that is currently "in" or radio will blacklist you in a heartbeat. Don't assume just because she is Gaga that radio will play anything. Plenty of people have fallen from grace so quickly. Kelly Clarkson endured it after all her success with Breakaway and many other artists have seen it happen to them. Gaga has to toe the line like any other artist. If you don't like the music on your radio you should really blame radio programmers everywhere, not the artists.

Actually, even Ke$ha can carry a tune and write a song that isn't about partying/booze/Mick Jagger!

You would never know this was Ke$ha

The dance/pop trend is SO popular now though that most labels are pushing for that type of music in order to be played on the radio like Brian suggests. I don't know that much about Gaga so I could be wrong, but I thought the story behind "The Fame" was similar. She wasn't getting famous with her piano/Norah Jones-y music, so she became "Gaga" and did dance/pop to achieve it.

I actually hope the trend fades out a bit. Probably a quarter of my iTunes is dance/pop and I love it, but it's getting kind of tiresome now, because it truly is starting to all blend together. I was kind of hoping that Gaga's newer music was less electropoppy and more toward something else, but if anything, it's become more 80s/euro/dance pop. Unfortunately, I think this just means that this type of sound and imagery continue. It's too bad, because Gaga definitely has the influence to change that, IMO. Think of all the other pop artists who started mimicking Gaga's style and image after Bad Romance. On the other, when people like Bruno Mars or Adele hits the scene, I think people get more excited than they normally would because at least it sounds different. At least, I do.
