I just can't believe there wasn't any security that saw some shirtless guy with a tutu on charging towards the ice.
And Michelle's bitchface was priceless.

I was there in Dortmund, and it was really scary. He could have done anything. Kwan skated beautifully after that, we all were giving a standing ovation to her.
The security was really invisible. I could have shot Speedy, if I would like to.

The thing I always remember about this was that Ando said she thought the organizers had put the guy on deliberately as some kind of "entertainment" for the crowd whilst the next skater (MK) got ready to perform her LP.

What to prevent this from happening again? Anyone sitting in the front row can just jump over onto the ice at any time. Are there security guards on skates at the competition venues now?

I can't believe Kwan took an entire lap around the ice and didn't notice the guy...or did not appear to notice the guy.
It looked like she skated within a few feet of him before she glanced over and got off the ice.

It looked to me like she was just "acting normally" until she could get behind him to an exit. I checked my old BOI and International Figure Skating magazines about the incident; apparently, there were no searches or metal detectors for those entering the arena at the beginning. Kwan was probably concentrating hard. She was used to all sorts of cheers when she was on the ice so she probably didn't notice the 'roar' when the streaker came on.
At their closest, Kwan was probably only a few body lengths away from the guy. Kudos to Kwan for having acted so calmly throughout and then skating so beautifully afterwards. Just for that alone she deserved all those 6.0s - and it so happened that it was the last chance to give out 6.0s so the judges didn't hold back.
Not to be mean, but I kept imagining what would happen if it was Cohen who was on the ice. :shhuffle:

LinkAfter the event Kwan indicated at first she thought he was a sweeper (flower girl) and then a streaker. Then she said it dawned on her he could have a gun and left the ice.

i was there too!!! and it was the first and only time i saw michelle skate live. (of course, it was also the last time michelle stepped onto the podium at worlds). Gives me goosebumps just thinking that I have managed to watch michelle compete at least once in my life time
even though i never liked the tosca programme, i respected michelle even more as an athlete after that programme. she was so cool, calm and collected. i wish i'm like her ... lol
good memories indeed from the 2004 worlds. it was a v. enjoyable world championships.

what really strikes me about kwan (in-person) is her flow. she's fast, definitely -- faster than cohen and ando, probably equal to arakawa and suguri. but really it's her flow that makes it seem even faster. she has a great glide. Originally Posted by Marco

Well, i saw the qualification round as well and I thought she was slow and laboured there ... the loop had been a nightmare! She was struggling with it so much in the warm up
In fact we never saw a triple loop from her again after the LP in Dortmund.
And what a loop that was ... the entire audience was in dead silence as she began her programme (after the naked guy went). the atmosphere was just electrifying!!! can you imagine!! and even more so as she landed the first loop ....
What impressed me the most was obviously her focus & determination. She also had a commanding presence on the ice (a bit diva-ish) and her edges were clean & general basic skating / posture absolutely beautiful. Something completely lacking these days! (Dare I say it, I don't think Yu na kim / mao can compare ....
) ...

Michelle seemed to have ice-water in her veins after that incident. I was very impressed. She didn't skate perfectly, doubling one of her jumps late in the program, but it was a courageous effort.
