I'm not impressed that apparently the IOC has decided to include a team skating event without any indications of how it would be structured/scored. Unless I am missing something.

I'm sure I read somewhere over the past few months Cinquanta saying the team event would come before the individual events.

Adding Synchro would mean about 200 more athletes (ten teams? of 20) plus all their backup people (coaches etc). It's not gonna happen.

Can you imagine if there had been a team event in Vancouver and Brian Joubert had a chance to redeem himself after his disaster in the single event? Mao rematch with Kim? THe Germans getting another shot at the Chinese pairs?

The potential for this could be great for figure skating.
This would be very unfair when only some skaters get the opportunity while the others don't because they have no team with medal chances. The sport should be about fairness (naive, I know). Some will have multiple Olympic medals just because they happen to be Russian or Canadian. It would make me even more sad for good skaters who will never win the Olympic medal. The idea is nationalistic to the core and I hate it.

It would be a little bit better if not the same skaters can do both events.

Figure skating is an individualistic sport, not team sport. Getting medal with easy program or splatting all over the place because someone else landed many jumps or is a great ice dancer makes no sense to me.

I would love synchro competition but, well, it's not going to happen.

Individuals? So should we get rid of pairs and ice dancing as well?

I hate comparing gymnastics with skating but there is nothing wrong with individuals pooling their efforts for a team score. Many other sports do it. Did you see the WTT?

Even though I'm not thrilled with this and don't think it will add to the sport, I'll certainly watch it if it comes to pass. I mean, I watched Skating With The Stars, quite unironically

I'm not excited about this in the least.
I completely agree with you about the "elements competitions", I'm sure they won't do that but more as World Team Trophy, but I just want to add those competitions already exists in Canada in local competitions(for learn-to-skate programs to senior bronze and adults). I do some of them for the last 3 years lol. It's really fun! but I won't agree if they do that on olympic level lol.

Yes, but so will the other ones. Unless they make a rule where the lowest score doesn't medal the highest score can't do it by themselves can they?
That is why they call it a TEAM sport. Isn't there always a slow runner on a relay team or even one that trips? So that person shouldn't get a medal even if the team wins? Give me a break

What runners trip and still win gold medals?

My point was that your post implied that Sarah had somehow not earned her OGM. And if we're talking about teams, there is a lot more potential for someone with a less-than-stellar performance to medal/win, based on the greatness of their teammates.

I deplore the idea of a team event. But I guess it means more exposure for the sport and money in the ISU coffers, so I can't complain too much.
I meant to take the high road.... but I missed the exit.

As fans of figure skating I don't understand how people can really dislike the idea...figure skating is a popular major sport during the winter games it only helps develop the olympic movement. Its about promoting diversity and inclusion and i think team events are great for this. And figure skating is winter sports that i think can reach a larger potential of athletes from other countries.

Lots of sports get team events why not figure skating... fyi they added team luge to the olympic program for 2014 and you can probably predict that Germany, Austria and Latvia will medal in team luge just as much as you can predict Can, Rus and USA will medal in team figure skating.

I'd rather watch team figure skating!

According to Speedy the team event will be held first with a one or two day break before the individual events will begin.

There is some additional information here!

One thing for sure, the coming many months here will be filled with yea and nea's on this new Olympic skating event with all it's myriad of reasons, but push comes to shove the great majority of we die-hard fans and a huge number of casual fans WILL WATCH it!
There is nothing more captivating in this world than a woman's form gracing the ice in skating boots. It's simply sensational!

    Reuters newswire article: http://www.universalsports.com/news/...id=528406.html
According to the IOC, the figure skating team event will feature teams made up of six skaters: one male, one female, one pairs team and one ice dancing couple. Points will be awarded to each skater/couple, and the team with the highest number of points will be the winner.

To achieve that, they could just give separate medals for short and long programs, and make the requirements for each more different.

luge is seperate events of Singles Men, Singles Women, and Doubles Men, i'm assuming the team luge event is the best combined runs of all the disciplines.

Wow, now that does sound like a bad idea.
