Song of the year is essentially a song writing award. Record of the year goes to performer but perhaps producers also get in on the award?

Record of the year goes to those involved with the recording of the song. Those who win for the recording has changed over the years. From wikipedia:
The honorees through its history have been:
1959-1965: Artist only.
1966-1998: Artist and producer.
1999–present: Artist, producer, and engineer and/or mixer.
"When I was poor and I complained about inequality people said I was bitter, now I'm rich and I complain about inequality they say I'm a hypocrite. I'm beginning to think they just don't want inequality on the agenda because it is a real problem that needs to be addressed." - Russell Brand
I'm an awards nut, but the Grammys never appealed to me. I think it's just that there are so many artists out there putting out recordings, and albums that it's really hard to narrow the field down to actually choose what's the best of that year. Also, music is the most subjective artform and really doesn't make any sense, for me, to have an award show. Music either hits you or it doesn't.
