I replace mine when they start looking frayed. I replace them about a week before Adult Nationals whether they're looking frayed or not.

I don't compete, so I'm going to go with "when they break"

I've always been able to tie the broken ends together to make it through a session, and I replace the laces on both feet after that.

I had to replace mine recently because one of the hooks ended up with a jagged bit which started cutting the lace. Ended up filing the jagged bit with a nail file and then brought new laces.
What the hell is a Ninja Twizzle? Does it have anything to do with hard shelled aquatic life forms that live in the sewer?

I replace them when they break. But I regularly shift them from some centimeters. This way, it's not always the same part who fray.
