Why is Tom Zakrajsek such a popular coach?

Oh, I feel dirty for even posting this but I am serious!

I watched most of US Nationals on IceNetwork, television or youtube. I could point out Tom Z's skaters in the novice/junior ranks just by watching them, I didn't even need to read their information or wait until they got to the Kiss N' Cry. Most of his skaters are lacking in many areas but they seem to be able to pull off enough jumps to place decently. Many of his skaters are known for having awful programs or having a complete inability to show any flare. Their speed and ice coverage is sorely lacking. What gives? Why was he coaching 90% of the skaters at Nationals!? I mean, I guess he gets some credit because they had to beat out others to even get there. I just would not be sending my children to him after watching most of his skaters. Ironically, the skater he coaches who wins a National title this year did so with no help from him, apparently.

    Because he's one hot DILF!

On a more serious note, Tom Z is an extremely hard-working an dedicated coach. There are stories about him literally sleeping at the ice rink.

He seems to have a great relationship with his students too.

Having said that, you are of course right in your assessment.

Technically, he's doing the right job. But he doesn't seem to be able to package his skaters.

Why do skaters go to him? Because his skaters get decent placement and US judges seem to like them. Most have good jumping technique.

His "Igor Sphill" just needs a "Marina Zoueva" to compliment him. Someone to help with better choreography, better packaging, and bringing some personality and excitement into his skaters. I hope he picks up a "Zoueve" very very soon, for the sake of exciting skating if nothing else. JMO. (And I admit Zoueve has some hits and some misses with choreo and with costumes, but having the right someone to work with Tom could still work to the benefit of his skaters)

I too could spot his skaters long before the KnC. I don't get it. How can they all be so similar. Kinda like Z-Bots (you know Tom Z - robots).

That's what I was yelling at the tv - "Another Z-Bot!"

Agree, but would add speed to this list.

^^ This! Is there a stroking and basics specialist in the Tom Z team? Who's the blonde lady always in the K&C with him? With Chan there training under Krall, the disparity in speed and edge control has to be more than glaring to everyone training and working there. Obviously they won't all be able to develop SS comparable to Chan's but they all definitely have a lot of room for improvement.

That said I was impressed with Tom Z's relationship with all his students at Nationals, particularly his feedback to Joshua Farris after that nightmare FS which I thought was very well handled

He is successful in the sense that he can turn less talented skaters into consistent (and therefore successful) skaters.

I thought Tom Dickson was the "Zoueva" type for his program?

Is Tom Dickson still there? He used to do such good programs for so many people.

All who go to him improve their jumps immensely, so they all end up staying with him. That's pretty much the reason.

Otherwise, everyone would have left cuz he doesn't know how to package skaters or improve the other aspects of their skating.

The fact that it is so easy to identify who he coaches (the Z-Bot effect) indicates that he must have a cookie cutter approach to coaching rather than approaching skaters as individuals.

I think that could eventually backfire on him as skaters grow and mature emotionally and want to express themselves more.

I can only think of five skaters that she's coached - Lisa Ervin, Tonia Kwiatkowski, Aren Nielsen, Timothy Goebel, and Miki Ando. Who are other C-bots?

Becky Calvin and Delilah something also coach with him. Neither are particularly exciting. He should find out it Ryan Jahnke or Braden Overfelt would join the group for choreography. Becky Bradley was in the knc at times too.

I'm glad to hear Tom Z. puts all his energy into his students. That sort of explains his other quirky habits. He has no energy or use for parents or other coaches. In fact he is as arrogant as anyone could be. So now I understand where he puts his energy.

^He does strike me as being, er... quite unlikable. Not that I have anything to back this up other than a "feeling."

She also seems to have a rather adorable personality. Wish that could come out more in her skating.

Wasn't she there with someone this weekend?

Now that you mention it, she was. I can't believe she's 71.
