We're still a-waitin' for the Big'Un....
I'm in New York City and all we've had was a bit of rain/freezing rain.
In Northern Virginia we're only supposed to get a whole bunch of rain tomorrow.
Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the universe.

That's a lot of snow! We've just been told we're to have a blizzard - I say wait til it happens. Our snow policy is you're expected to get to work your usual way, and if the car doesn't work - take a bus. If I can't get out of my driveway, I likely can't make it to the bus stop either.
^ Oh. My. Gosh.
It is starting here now as predicted at 5pm. Weatherman says we are "ground zero" as far as snowfall amounts. My grocery store was SO packed tonight. I did get milk at the gas station no problem. I don't have to go anywhere tommorrow. They've already closed all the schools, thank goodness I don't have to get up at 5am to check!

We're supposed to get .13 inch of ice. So real fun! Not. Last Wednesday my school decided it would be awesome to wait until 9 to cancel school. I got to drive in the slippery snow for like an hour because I was afraid of missing class.
Hopefully, they'll decide a little earlier tomorrow because the ice scares me so much more than snow.
Forecast for tonight is: "Visibility one quarter mile or less at times. snow accumulation of 5 to 8 inches. Ice accumulation of less than one quarter of an inch." Lovely. At least the buses are still running -- I hope. Got to get home soon.
Today all primary, secondary, and pre-schools in several surrounding counties were closed. Also all community and four year colleges -- except the university. They did cancel any evening classes tonight and will make an announcement by 10 p.m. about classes tomorrow. Considering that tomorrow's forecast is for a total snow accumulation of between 8 and 13 inches, with blowing snow all day, I suppose that's possible, except they have only closed this place because of snow twice in 150+ years.
So far it's been more like graupel, than snow. Walking through it is like walking in loose, icy sand grains the size of sea salt crystals. Until it freezes over because of the wind -- then you have a nice slick icy crust. Going to bundle up and face the weather in a few minutes.
That's nuts! Horrible snow and the city is paralyzed as you said. TU never closes, not even in the ice storm a few years back that knocked power for about a week in some places.
ETA: TU is having an all-school snowball fight. Greeks vs. Athletes vs. Everyone else. Wish I were there

we are just waiting for the 'blizzard' to arrive.. the wind is making the roof creak But we have the white stuff on the ground for at least 4 months of the year so am quite prepared.. for those of you who might also be expecting ice - remember to pull your windshield wiper blades out away from the windshield.. - makes it much easier after the storm especially if ice.. I learned that from my daughter who trains in Quebec as they all do that..
Thanks to PI .. I discovered I'm actually a Nontheist

I work in a hospital and today administration said that anyone who could not make it in would be picked and and driven it. Then, they could spend the night.(without pay of course) and work again the next day. How kind of them. I traded with someone who lives across the street from the hospital so I can stay warm and relax with my family instead of being one of the crazies on the road tomorrow.
Everything is covered in ice. I predict a work-delay tomorrow.
Remembering my 31 years in Southern Ontario. Stay safe, folks!
And in regards to schools NEVER closing - my first year of college, me and my boyfriend moved to Colorado. I went to school in Denver and he went to Colorado School of Mines. There was a horrible snow storm where his school was (Golden)... and the school closed for the first time in 10 years. SO HAVE FAITH!! to those pushing for school closures
