I guess the PGA win was a sign of things to come!

Big surprises for me was no Nolan for Best Director (screwed AGAIN after being nominated for DGA), no Inception for Editing, no Andrew Garfrield for Social Network, and where the eff is Tron for best VFX and score?? Daft Punk wuzrobbed!

For some reason I thought the Academy Awards had created a separate Best Picture category for animated films, yet I see Toy Story 3 in the big group of films nominated for Best Picture. Am I mistaken that there was a separate animated film category in the past? Or did they do away with that category when the decision was made to expand the Best Picture group from five to ten films?

There is also a best animated category; IIRC there are only 3 nominees: How to Train Your Dragon, The Illusionist and Toy Story 3.

The idea when they created the Animated Feature category was to reward those animated films that people felt never got any recognition from the Academy. However, those films are still eligible for Best Picture (in the same way Documentaries and Foreign Films are still eligible for Best Picture). There's criticism that it isn't fair for animated films to be eligible for both awards since dramas and comedies don't have their own separate categories, but if you think of animated films as less of a genre and more as a different medium of film then it makes more sense.

Yay for The King's Speech! Well deserved!

Did anyone notice Mila Kunis was not nominated for Best Supporting Actress? After I saw the movie I didn't think she had much of a role anyway.

As much as I loved Black Swan and thought she was really good in it, I didn't think Mila Kunis was really award-worthy. I was surprised that she got a SAG nomination for it to be honest. I wasn't surprised that she got a Golden Globe nomination considering the HFPA are a bunch of Star sluts.

It's just never happened since Beauty and the Beast way back in....1991?

Although the increase to 10 slots last year was rumored to be because of the snubs for Wall-E and The Dark Knight in 2008.

Up was nominated for both Best Picture and Best Animated film last year.

When Beauty and the Beast was nominated there was no category for animated films.

Very disappointed that Andrew Garfield was snubbed for supporting actor for The Social Network.

No Julianne Moore either. She deserved a nod before Jennifer Lawrence and Michelle Williams. Didn't care for either Winter's Bone or Blue Valentine.

I loved The Kids are All Right, and it's one of my favorite movies of the year. However, I don't get why Annette Benning is getting much more awards buzz and praise over Julianne Moore. The movie was more of an ensemble piece and it's just weird to me that one is getting nominated over the other since I feel Benning's performance is incredibly reliant on Moore.

Annette Bening's chances just got better with Julianne Moore's omission from the Best Actress nominations. Loves me some Julianne, and yes it's hard to separate Bening's performance from Moore's. But it is what it is ... Julianne will win someday. This year, Portman would've run away in this race if Julianne was siphoning TKAAR votes from Bening.

Love this! It's Christian Bale's Oscar this year. But loving Hawke's nom = "Deadwood" character actor makes good! Also, Ruffalo = also well-deserved nom.

I'm not trying to drift this thread into PI, but ... methinks that voters are wary of rewarding the WfS makers in the midst of some the storm of unconvenient untruths in their former Oscar winner being debated [revealed and litigated?]. A few shortcuts for storyline/POV purposes can diminish a film's legend, and - relevant in this case - the filmakers' reputations.

I'm so glad King's Speech doesn't have to compete with Social Network for screenplay this time. (Since there was a book by Logue's grandson that came out around the same time as the film, I feared it would count as "adapted," but I guess the film wasn't really based on the book.) I really want the KS screenplay to win, but the SN screenplay is so favored that I'm sure it wouldn't have stood a chance against it.

Will leave the discussion of whether Sorkin is the most overrated screenwriter since Joss Whedon for another time. (In fairness, I suppose I should really see SN before making that claim anyway! It's currently in my Netflix queue.) I'm not saying that they're not talented; they're both very talented. But I still think they're overrated.

ETA: "Australian actor Rush learned about his best supporting actor nomination after performing in a stage play in Sydney, Australia. 'Suddenly at the end they gave us this roaring standing ovation,' Rush said."
