    Quilt dimensions

I'm planning to make a quilt for a friend in America, and am getting a bit confused as to what size to make it. What are the common measurements for king or queen sized quilts?

Thanks, but that's exactly my problem - too many differing dimensions.

Just take the mattress size (queen or king) and add a minimum of 12 inches to the length, and 24 inches to the width. That will cover the mattress to the top of the box spring. If you want it to fall below the box spring, add 20" to the length and 40" to the width. If you want it to be floor length, you're going to have to find out from your friends how tall their bed is.

Most queen size quilts/comforters are marketed under "Full/Queen" size, if that helps you any at all.

My queen size mattress is about 14" thick so the Full/Queen size quilts were too small and the king size is a bit too big.

To help you narrow it down, most Queen size beds in the U.S. are 60 X 80 inches and King is usually 76 X 80 (these are the most common dimensions). Thus, the length is the same, so the width is the dimension that makes the most difference. For most queen size beds, 90x90 inches would work, and 100 x 90 for most king size. Of course, if your friend has an extra thick mattress, then you would aim a larger size. I once made a quilt for a friend who wanted it to the floor (like a bedspread). Since she had a king size bed, the think was nearly 10 feet square (120 x 120 inches)! I had to move most of the furniture out of my living room when I was basting the layers together.
