Do you prefer to see movies on your own or with someone?

I prefer to go to films with someone, although I'm otherwise somewhat of a solitary creature. I have one friend in particular I go to movies with quite regularly, and also sometimes go with Mr. Japanfan - an other couple will join us on occasion.

A movie is an outing for me, usually involving dinner before or after, or coffee. Much of the reason I enjoy company for movies is the chance to discuss the movie afterward.

I like to go to a movie with a friend or two but for a movie I REALLY want to see, I want to go alone. I don't like to be interrupted or talked to or anything like that. However, the downside is that I like to discuss movies and my interpretations but I can't do that if I go alone. I guess that is what FSU is for, haha

I'm a both/either person. I have no problem going to see movies by myself - although I went to see Boys Don't Cry alone and wish I'd had someone with me because it was such a hard movie to watch - but also enjoy company. There are a few friends I have where love of films is a big connection point, and most of our hangout time is going to movies.

for me, part of it is location. There are several cinemas within walking distance to my house. If I want to see a film that's only playing somewhere farther away, I'm less likely to go by myself.

Teena Brandon was in my home room in high school. And I know another girl who was depicted falsely in that movie and sued the production company. The way the movie told the story was not accurate and devastated Brandon's immediate family and close friends.

I refused to see it.

I'm a both/either person. I have no problem going to see movies by myself - although I went to see Boys Don't Cry alone and wish I'd had someone with me because it was such a hard movie to watch - but also enjoy company.

I like to watch them on my own cause there is no one who can disturb/destroy the atmosphere and I can really get into the story and characters.
However, Boys Don't Cry is a very good example. I saw it with friends. I cried really hard at the end and was glad not to be alone. It was really intense

Comedies is different, however.

I used to love to go to the movies with friends, but gradually stopped going as the theaters got smaller and smaller to the point that "going to the movies" gave exactly the same experience as watching the movie in someone's basement. I'll still go if invited, but only if the movie is playing in one of the larger venues.

My husband and I have opposite taste in movies. He likes action, horror and old westerns. I like comedy, musicals and historical drama. Guess which couple you won't see on a movie date anytime soon?

I prefer going on my own. When I"im with people, they tend to want to ask questions, or make comments and then I miss things. I can also get out of the theatre quickly, and choose wehre i want to sit.

I'll go with others if I have to, but it's not my preference.

If I love the movie enough I go byself unless the movie is not the main reason I am going so then I go with someone else. hehehehe I picked purple because I love the colour purple!

I generally go with a friend, but if no one else wants to see it and I do, then I go by myself. It's certainly much easier to go on your own. The first time it felt a little funny, but then I figured why not? Stupid to miss a movie because no one you know wants to see it.

I very much prefer to go with someone. But many others, if I have to I will and have gone alone.

If I go alone, it's always a matinee.

When I was younger, I would end up concentrating less on the film, and panic, wondering if the people going with me were enjoying the film or not.

Now, if there's a movie I want to see, I just go and see it. My friends' and my schedules often prevent us from co-ordinating, and there are times I've missed seeing a film, waiting for all of us to get our acts together.

Other than that, we do catch up at DVD nights and see films we've missed the first time around.

I usually go alone because I like to go to movies on the spur of the moment. I like going to movies with someone too, but when I watch the movie alone, I am more into the movie, and I like that.

It's nice to see there are so many people that go to movies alone. I thought I did something that very few did.

It totally depends on the movie. I love watching "casual" movies with others. Romantic comedies, action movies - stuff like that. But some movies, that really interest me, certain historical movies, politthrillers, screen adaptions of my favourite books - those I enjoy watching alone, at least the first time.

There seems to be two questions here: do you like going to the movies with someone/alone or see the movie with someone/alone.

The whole going out part I'd rather do with someone, but I'm very attuned, for lack of a better word, to other people's reactions/feelings and that can get in the way of my enjoying the movie. It's kind of like my attention is divided and I can't concentrate on the movie just for myself. It's not a big problem, but if I want to see how I really feel about a movie, I'd rather go by myself. After that I often bring someone to watch it with me again and then I just watch it "through" them. That's how I ended up going to see Forrest Gump 11 times.

Btw, where I grew up "going to the movies" was an euphemism for going there to make out (or more...), not necessarily to see the movie. Hence people sometimes asked, "Are you going to the movies or are going to see the movie?"

I am too. If I think that the person watching the movie with me doesn't like it, I tend to look at it more critically. This is even worse if I'm re-watching a movie with someone else.

I answered alone, but really no strong preference. I do both, depending on various things, such as availability and interest. I like lots of foreign/indie, which some folks don't like.
I do like how many have posted they go alone and are comfortable with it. I have some friends that look at me like I have 2 heads when i tell them i went to a film bymyself. Some folks would never do it.
