I think it is more likely to elicit "Kwantrasts
For me, the bigger issue than it being a signature piece for Michelle, is that it just doesn't seem suited to Rachael.
But I don't know what is suited to Rachael, either.
You know, maybe Rachael chose it...
Has she called Vera Wang yet?![]()
I heard from someone who has seen the program. They said, at first everyone was shocked and even a little horrified when EOE came on - I think everyone feels Michelle owed this music. However, they said the program is breathtaking and gives them chills every time! The best by far Rachael has ever had. And most of the skaters at the Broadmoor feel the same way, and stop to watch her run it. I guess we will know in two weeks, but apparently, she does it more than justice.
Rachael is a really nice girl; I like her. If she can pull it off, more power to her.
In a way, Rachael might be wanting the comparisons to Kwan, especially since Rachael is the defending champion, and the last skater to successfully defend the national title was Kwan. It might be a nice soundbite for her.
Is it maybe a case of the music giving people chills, or the program? I can't picture Rachel using this music, myself, but I will reserve judgement until I see it. She is a gutsy skater, and this is definitely a gutsy move. I wonder how people would react if someone ever chooses Lyra Angelica to skate to.
Well, maybe she will prove all of us wrong. :-p I think I'm now curious enough to watch next week (she's usually my "fridge break").
I don't see that as much of a problem -- she only used it in '98, and it just doesn't have the iconic status of EoE.
And really, I loved Kwan's skating and felt very lucky to see EoE live in competition, but I see this as a situation where there are likely to be very unfavorable comparisons that don't benefit Rachael rather than as taking offense that someone would "dare" to skate to EoE. Kind of the same way I felt when Kwan made the (foolish, in my mind) decision to skate to Bolero. The chance of it turning out well in comparison to Torvill and Dean's memorable performance was pretty damn small.
I'll reserve judgment until I see it. Rachael has some stunning spread eagle and ina bauer positions, and if she can place her elements at effective points in the music, I can see it being a wonderful program for her.
And anything's gotta be an improvement over her previous SP...
ETA: For what it's worth, Kwan's "East of Eden" is in my top 3 favorite programs of all time.![]()
