I agree that Maria was voidy here but her spiral sequence... And her layback travelled quite a bit. I also feel that the performance level went down as the program progressed. But her jumps were very nice.

So, anyone want to do an FSU judging game with these freeskates? Add in the German ladies too?

I think it would make a great judging game. I could put the results into the system. Just got to get the ISUCalc program working on my laptop.

If someone wanted to post the link to the clips then that would be appreciated.

Sure, I'll judge...I love stuff like this. I'll link to all the available freeskates, does anyone want to start a new thread maybe?

    Czako
    Witt
    Butyrskaya
    Bonaly
    Markova
    Szewczenko
    Baiul

    Oksana wasn't without mistakes either.

I'm not positive what the spin requirements were back then, but her layback looked short and there was no sit position in her combination spin.

Still the program is one of the finest works of choreography ever.

I've always wanted to do a judging game based on 3axel1996's vast amount of videos. I wish someone would get 8 other people so we could do our own competitions.

I've already judged some Olympics myself from youtube videos so I already have a head start!

    Anyone interested??

As of three years ago, she was married and living in a one-room unit in Zaporozhye, where she was coaching young skaters and trying to build up skating from scratch.

ETA: According to the article, she had twice been confined to a wheelchair but was fine at the time of the interview. It isn't clear from the article if her mobility problem was skating-related.

Having looked at the SPs, I'd still have Baiul in first.

I have always wanted to know what Maria did (or did not do) at her infamous debut at Worlds 93 to place so poorly in Qualifying. Does anybody have any info on what she tried (and likely failed) or a video?

The results of Maria's qualifying group were

    Chen
    Baiul
    Kiellmann
    Preston
    Szewczenko
    Bo Zhang
    Leray
    Claeys
    Kulovaná
    Szwed
    Krieg
    Torp-Lind
**** CUT OFF POINT for Qualifying *****
    Yaginuma
    Lee
    Butyrskaya

Maria probably landed at most 2 triples to not qualify vs. the women on the lower rungs of that list (who only had triple toe loops and triple salchows in their repertoire)

Wow I loved Butyrskaya's LP at this competition! I never had any idea she was so good that year, definitely the best LP that year IMO.

    That's exactly what I noticed.

I thought she made a good effort at getting (back?) more softness in this performance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVt3I4IL18s

Maria would have defended her World title in 2000 with her free skate from the 94 Europeans IMO. She might have come 2nd in the LP phase to Kwan but that would have still been enough to win overall with the factored placings. Of course by 2000 she was a name whereas in 1994 she was a nobody in the judges eyes which explains her scores and non podium finish.

    SP Results
    Butyrskaya
    Slutskaya
    Kwan
    Gusmeroli
    Hughes
    Nikodinov
    Sebestyen
    Volchkova

The protocol has that crazy triangular matrix of results from the 'one by one' scoring system...sheesh..I had forgotten how that looked.

    Butyrskaya
    Slutskaya
    Kwan
    Gusmeroli
    Hughes
    Nikodinov
    Sebestyen
    Volchkova

But, remember, there was a Qualifying Round, and of the seven mentioned above, only Butyrskaya and Sebestyen were in Qualifying Round "A."
