"Her spins are just as difficult...just as important...MORE difficult, in fact, than jumps are...."
-referring to Lucinda Ruh's short program at 1999 Worlds & the fact that spins weren't given the same amount of credit as jumps

    "Good for you, Lucinda Ruh!"

"There is an ease and a backbone and a great deal of forceful exposure to making this a good event."

One of the best Uncle Dick interviews ever. I would LOVE to spend a day with him.

He says one high-ranking woman used to skate with her arms so close to her sides it was like she was making "armpit farts."
OK, what is he talking about here?

"It's raining teddy bears!" after a Michelle Kwan performance.

Also, "Everyone in the arena is standing, including me!" after Rudy Galindo's Nationals win.

True that. There's a reason why he was banned from commentating in the late 2000s. Button was definitely my favorite (American) commentator up until the early-mid 2000s, but he started to lose it quickly thereafter. I will never forgive him for lambasting my precious freakin Liashenko in the 2006 Olympics. He was sooo unnecessarily bitchy he even shut up Sandra and Scott...

Was that at 1998 US Nationals?

I think it's hard to top (quote approximate): there's not enough death in that death spiral.

I also like "It don't mean a thing, if it aint' got that triple" (from 88 olympics about Joanne Conway who skated to Ellington and .... fell on her combo).

He actually used that one on Skating with the Stars. He's still got it.

One time Peggy Fleming made a comment on someone's beautiful layback or some other thing Dick liked, and his response was, "Peggy, will you marry me?" Peggy replied that she was married already!

I always loved Dick's praising of skaters that they have left the sport different and better just because they were in it.

    Banned?
Uncle Dick suffered a terrible head injury in 2000. I'll always give him a pass...

Favorite: (about Tim Goebel) He's built like six o'clock.

All the ABC commentators except for Dick Button moved to ESPN when ESPN took over the ISU contract in 2005. He remained on ABC for the USFS stuff. Until all the skating moved to NBC/Universal sports.

Dick was on the ESPN broadcasts sporadically after the contract change, right off the top of my head, 2006 US Nats and 2008 Worldscome to mind immediately.

According to Charlie Brown, there are three things you can't help but stare at: a babbling brook, a crackling fire and a Zamboni clearing the ice.

I believe he was eventually added after a couple of years.

Nationals were part of USFS's contract. He never stopped doing the USFS stuff -- Nationals, Skate America, cheesefests.

He didn't do Worlds or any other Grand Prix events that were on the ISU contract for the first couple of years of the ISU contract with ESPN. I think he returned for 2007 and 2008 Worlds.
