NBC Skating ratings up over last year according to Sports Media Watch

Tweeted this link earlier, but figure I'd post it on the forums too.

More precisely, ratings for the GPF are up (1.1 vs. 0.9 last year). Interesting, considering you'd think the opposite would happen since last year was the Olympic season. Anyway:

[Last] Sunday's telecast [of the ISU Grand Prix Final] was the #2 top non-football sporting event of the weekend on broadcast, surpassing college basketball on CBS and golf on NBC. Only the Pokerstars.net Million Dollar Challenge on FOX, which had a lead-in from NFL action, did better (1.5, 2.263 mil).

Maybe, this might induce NBC to show more skating next year?

For NBC, the crown jewel of their skating package is clearly the US Nationals. That's the only event that they can count on to draw above a 1.0. I take it that any other skating they choose to show is in part to promote coverage for US Nats. Disson shows probably draw a slightly different audience (families?) than the competitions themselves.

Must be the Terry Gannon effect.
    Creating drama!
