What could Rachael Flatt do to get much higher scores?

I have a simple question, but a question that's important nonetheless.

What could Rachael Flatt do to get much higher scores? It's true that you can answer this question with "Nothing. She has already maxed out her scores and there's no way for her to score much higher." On the other hand, some of you may feel that either more difficult footwork, a balletic style, better spins, deeper edges, or a promotion campaign from the USFSA may do the trick. I was just throwing out some ideas in that list above, but I think some of you experienced observers of skating may have some altogether different solution in mind.

Get into a time machine and go back and be born as someone else entirely. I don't mean that to be mean, I mean that in the sense that she has maximized her potential. Most of what holds her back is stuff that is out of her control. She is a wonderfully consistent jumper with some other nice qualities, but there are fundamental problems with her skating that I think have to do with her build and her lack of athleticism. It's not her fault. I think she does great with what she has, but what she has is not enough to be a world beater. She has played the deck she's been dealt to the best of her ability, but that deck isn't that great of a deck. I don't think Tom Z, has that much to do with it.

she needs to skate much faster and add more transitions. Plus her edges are shallow. Also she needs to work on her lines. She has the body of Tonya Harding and Midori Ito but lacks good skating skills and power. So it's unfortunate.

Agree with whoever said to leave Tom Z. Agnes needs to too. All of his skaters are relatively slow (Rachael, Agnes, and Gilles) and more speed = more command of the ice = higher PCS. And it'll help Rachael gets more height in her jumps.

Come to think of it, almost all of Tom Z's famous students are really slow.. except for AP.

Even if Rachael doesn't leave Tom Z. completely, it would be beneficial for her to work with specialists on the areas of her skating that need the most work. Get her to Janet Champion for spin help, and then send her to work with an ice dancer on edges, stroking and speed for a few weeks. Her jumps are fine, and I know she's been working on other aspects of her skating (i.e., taking dance classes), but I think it's imperative that she focus on upping her skating skills. I think she could see a general PCS increase of about .5 across the board if she were to improve her speed and attack.

I'm interested to see who she'll work with once at Stanford.

^ I think Christy Ness is still in the Bay Area?

Back to Rachael - There may not be too much she can do, but I think she would benefit by developing more speed, getting into the ice and using her knees more but who knows, it could throw off her consistent jumping and I'm not sure what exercises she could implement to develop more power / speed.

Maybe she could also develop more stretch from certain exercises [ballet, yoga, pilates] but that may be minimal and she may be doing that already. Still, any improvements would be welcome.

And how about some slight cosmetic changes; showing her white boots instead of stockings might give her legs/feet more shape.

I'm not sure how much she could do, but I agree with those that have suggested ballet and yoga. I think a different choreography would help and even though Rachel likes the type of programs she does, I think stretching herself with something more choreographically challenging could also help.

    Quads!

Seriously, a LOT more ballet, stroking exercises that will teach her greater knee bend and give her more power and speed. Although I agree with the other poster that she's done a very good job with the cards she's been dealt.

She needs to jump bigger, go back to her style of programs like 2009 worlds sp, and skate faster with better footwork.

Change her style..seh is so damm boring. Her face sais youth but her overall sais old and boring.

She needs a hair cut and a hairdo, new costumes, more and moreballet classes, more power and elegance.

Watching Improv Ice, and she seemed so much more at ease with "dancy" choreography in that impromptu number than she does in her short and long program this year... she definitely needs new choreography, this jazzy stuff just isn't working...she even seems more comfortable with hiphop

I agree. If she skates her competitive programs with the personality I just saw in Improv on Ice she will win nationals again, speed or no speed.

She was actually connecting with the music and looking great at Improv-Ice.

Please get her away from Colo Springs.

I definitely agree with this. I was surprised how good she was at Improv. I was half-expecting to see something boring and bland, lol.
