I love Terry. And I enjoyed watching Terry and Tanith working the Short Dance. Tanith is a natural. The two of them cover a lot of ground when they do intro fluff segments.

I hope Terry is getting a huge charge out of working with the new wave of skating commentators. Finally, the questions he asks are being answered by people who competed in the current era...not thirty years or more ago. I bet he enjoys interacting with a crowd that has some new thoughts on the world of figure skating.

I loved that Terry said he doesn't get to say "control your own destiny" anymore!

It's fun when Mike Weiss talks about his experience in a competition from 2000, and Terry actually remembers calling it. I enjoy the rapport Terry has with the newew commentators. If they added Johnny for color commentary, it would be perfect.

I agree with those that are loving Terry, Tara and Tanith! Way better than Scotty, Tom and Sandra!

Paul Wylie is in charge of Nationals this year. I'm guessing he has a lot on his plate and we won't see him as a commentator this year.

    I prefer commentators that-

    - Know the rules
    - Can speak to the rules
    - Do their homework
    - Talk about the skaters on the ice and not those coming up later.
    - DO NOT talk about themselves - except on rare occasions. This was/is one of Dick Button's strengths. He rarely spoke/speaks about himself and his accomplishments. He left that to others and when he was praised, he quickly deferred the attention to others or to the subject at hand.
    - Speak English well enough that they can find appropriate adjectives that apply to the individual skater and not use the same trite phrases (all-around skater) over and over again. Most commentators need a thesaurus.
    - Can teach me about skating and tell me something I don't know.
    - Don't ALWAYS complain about the judging (we all complain sometimes, but it shouldn't be a constant).

I like hearing Terry again. His knowledge and respect of skating and skaters are obvious and appreciated.

I have to disagree with this. Dick talked about himself a lot. In fact he is the only person I have ever heard who used the term "Button camel" to refer to a particular variation of the camel spin.

Overall, I like Tanith, Michael, and Tara a lot. I think they are all doing a nice job.

Having just watched the SC coverage I will say that the current line-up of former skaters turned commentators really only talks about themselves when Terry prompts them for the skater's perspective on things, i.e. "You're in the K&C after a performance like that, what are you thinking?"

So far I am loving Tanith and Tara. They seem to know intuitively when to talk and when to stay quiet. Tanith especially has surprised me with how well she anticipates what items need explaining and how to correct herself when she makes an error. I'm impressed. For someone who just retired a few months ago, she has the makings of a good commentator.

Michael still talks a bit too much for my taste and I personally wish he would shut up about the quad.

Terry is made of awesome. His voice alone comforts me. Hearing his voice over skating just makes everything better.

I'm so annoyed that I'll have to miss most of the NBC ladies broadcast because of football! I want to hear Terry! But since the ladies happened last week and wasn't very good and the football is happening today and probably will be very good, it's really the only choice.

^ Not sure if this helps but they should be repeating today's NBC show of NHK Ladies FS on Universal Sports TV at 9pm Eastern today.
They will also show it on Wednesday and Thursday.

I have to disagree with your disagreement. Uncle Dick does not bring up the "When I was competing..." reference very often when commentating. He usually only does it when Terry asks him about his competive days. Dick does bring up obscure references about people in the Art, but I see it more as a way to educate the mass.

I'm not liking David Petellier's commentary so far. He and Tracy Wilson have zero chemistry.

I loved UnivSports' commentating team for SkCanada. Terry is fantastic and the skating specialists all excellent. I was particularly bowled over by Michael Weiss' delivery (voice), knowledge, toned-down reactions, appropriate humor, etc. Tara is wonderful. Peter C is most enjoyable, little Russian words and all. Tanith is sooooo great and should absolutely be the one doing this, now that she has just retired from eligibles...but I miss Suzie Wynne a lot! (I hope that UniSports might bring-on Suzie for an event or two, when Tanith might be busy with SOI.)

I really enjoyed the NBC NHK commentary- I thought Micahel and Tara did a fine job (didn't know who the 3rd person was)- however, I WISH they would call the jumps. At least once Michael said something like "a nice 3-jump combination" which I feel like anyone, even someone who doesn't know the sport could identify. It would have been nice to know what the 3 jumps were- because I mix the toe jumps up! So while Scott use to grunt out the jump names as they did them, at least he identified them!

Michael also called a sequence a combination- but I feel like anyone who knows the difference would catch that and anyone who didn't probably wouldn't care otherwise.

At least for the NBC broadcast- I don't recall Michael talking much about the quad, at least not in relation to him doing them...

I thought Michael and (nice surprise for me) Tara did a very good job. Of course, Terry is a helluva commentator. So nice not to hear constipated Scotty.

Tara's official website just re-tweeted something that has me a little confused:

Olympic Gold Medalist, Tara Lipinski has joined NBC's Figure Skating commentators panel
    http://twitter.com/#!/twetBrynRoebuc...us/29314310705

I thought she already did commentary for NHK? Is this what they are referring to? Is this just a guest spot? Or is this the best case scenario and they're bringing her in permanently to replace Bezic??

People enjoyed Tanith yammering away during those programs????

Her comment about C&P in the past being all about the elements and nothing in between was one of the most comments I've ever heard in all the years I've watched skating.

It felt like opposite day was happening and no one told me.

But I guess if people like Susie Wynne's halting, awkward, obtrusive, inane commentary...

Although I would understand you disagreeing with me if what I wrote was opinion, I don't understand how you can disagree with a fact. Dick did indeed refer to the skater's camel spin as a "Button camel." And he is the only person I have ever heard refer to his ex-wife, Slavka Kohout, as "Slavka Button."

I agree that more recent commentary has changed into a pattern of Terry bringing up Dick's accomplishments and Dick seeming to shrug them off. Yet this has followed a long history of Dick saying a number of self-serving things -- including some examples of what he did at the Olympics.

If people enjoy his commentary, good. I don't want to spoil your enjoyment. But that does not negate the fact that he has made quite a few self-serving comments over the years.

    Havent' heard Tanith this year.

Tara and Michael make me MISS Scotty. I really dislike them. Tara is particularly strange... On one hand she seems to complain that Caroline Zhang is learning a new techinique as if that's bad and then thinks that other skaters should learn a new technique.. Well, then it would be "bad to change" wouldn't it Tara? All in all, she seems to be talking to hear the sound of her own voice. Terry had to rescue her at least once last week when she just went rambiling off somewhere LOL!

    Enjoy hearing Terry again.

OK, here's one tiny complaint about the otherwise-wonderful Peter Carruthers: What's up with Peter's fixation on single men's butt spins??? It reminds me of Uncle Dick's long-time fixation on women pair skater's fannies sticking out when going down into the death spiral. LOL!!!
