I'm honestly not sure what "very dancey" is supposed to mean. But I suggest you see it in motion first.

Right? That's ALL I want in life.

That and As on my exams on Thursday.

But I'll settle for the video.

I know, why have we not seen all this footage, icenetwork? The world needs to know about this rake story.

I also wish I knew what prompted Meryl doing the hokey pokey later on in the vid. I like how she's been wearing her hair lately: it reminds me of Ariel's hair for some reason, the way it's side-swept (except not bright red), http://images1.fanpop.com/images/pho...85-700-648.jpg. And I mean that as a compliment.

I found that picture by accident when searching "Ariel's hair." I thought it was hilarious. I thought her hair was so cool when I was a child, the way it did that loopy thingy in the front. I think I have some attempts of me trying to draw it as a 10-year old somewhere.

Ever noticed how you never see a Disney princess and Meryl in the same place at once?

I think defining dancey is kind of like defining pornography - hard to describe but you know it when you see it.

Partly I was thinking that it does not project the feel or look of any particular dance rhythm nor does it look like anything you would see done on the dance floor. (OK, comparatively few ice dance lifts would pass that test.) Mostly I was thinking it looked like a variation of a pairs show move.

When dance purists criticize D/W, it is usually with the complaint that their choreo looks too much like pairs skating, with a lot of hand in hand skating and acrobatics. (Somewhere there is a video where an interviewer asks Charlie about the difference between their dance and pairs and he gives a pretty bristly response.) I wondered if this was why they chose the tango for this year's free and I was pleased to hear the early reports that much of the free dance is done in close holds. (I wonder also if this is the reason the butterfly has disappeared this season.) So, it is a bit disappointing to see they are providing more fodder to their critics by doing such an acrobatic lift that doesn't exactly say ice dancing. IMO it is not such a wonderful move that it is risking taking a ~6 point hit for an illegal lift. I would not put it past the ISU officials to call it at Worlds even if it was never called in the GP season.

Personally, I love their powerful and athletic dance style and think they are the most exciting thing to happen in dance since ... well, maybe ever. Still, if I had to choose between them doing a dance I love and doing one that will quiet their critics and win them a World title, I'd opt for the latter.

I would for the former I really don't care about titles that much when a dance blows me away by its awesomeness. Which of course doesn't change the fact, I'd love them to become World Champions and be a bit more appreciated. But I would rather have them as constant silver or bronze medalists with unforgettable dances than the champions with a dance I don't really care about. Which is probably a bit selfish of me, but well

What's funny is that it's not only D/W's lifts that are becoming acrobatic - most of Team Shpilband's dance teams are doing at least one or two acrobatic lifts (like the one at the end of the Shibutanis' OD last season, that one had me the first time I saw it). It would be an interesting study to see if these crazy lifts result in getting Level 4s and +3 GOEs more often because they're so impressive looking. Weren't V/M the first ones of Team Shpilband to do crazy lifts, in their Umbrellas of Cherbourg FD? And now other dance teams are doing it as well.

The judges don't seem to mind though, they've been rewarding D/W handsomely for their lifts. D/W's critics seem to be mostly comprised of some internet skating posters and a few disgruntled Russian coaches/skaters, so I don't think it'll actually affect the judging. The dance purists make me laugh - isn't it the general consensus that people want the abstract, voidy programs these days? I don't mind the pairs comparison either. The pairs field is bit boring these days (with a few exceptions) so I'm all for D/W emulating pairs teams of old. D/W using music from either of Mishkutenok/Dmitriev's LPs would be freaking awesome.

I keep waiting for another lift from D/W that is as beautiful as that first lift from S&D. Now that's an acrobatic lift I could watch over and over.

I do Meryl has a chance at working at legline and toe point just a little, especially during step sequences, where she would let her guard down a little in the past - probably because she had more important things to worry about, like her edges! It seems like a really difficult thing to "fix" now, but I definitely saw major improvement last year. If they could put this final piece into the puzzle, it'd be glorious.

    . . .
Sorry. You're certainly entitled to your criticism but I'm still not understanding how you have such detailed opinions on a lift you haven't even seen. I never got the impression that it looked like something that a pair team would do. It's a dance lift for sure. That position is in the middle of a rotation lift with several other positions and, yes, it is rather impressive. The dance has been monitored at least 3 times by now. So I'm guessing that team Igor has some idea what they are doing with regards to the legality of that lift. But again. I just don't see how you can evaluate how well it fits their program, how much it looks like a dance lift, and how much it projects a dance rhythm from a still photo. It isn't as if these sorts of things are choreographed to look best in still photos taken through hockey glass.

Despite being quite the dance purist (the ballerina in me can't help wishing Meryl would continue improving her line and posture), I really enjoy watching D/W skate. Their atheleticism, the energy, the emotions is quite different from a "classical" team like V/M but it's just as wonderful and memorable in its own way.

I don't think doing craaazzy Shpilband-esque lifts earns more Level 4s than a less acrobatic lift. The difficulty might add to the GoE but I think its greatest impact is the OMG effect it has on people as a highlight of the programme. I showed my friends D/W's programmes from the Olympics and their immediate reaction was "HOLY COW!"

I love that picture of them! Can't argue with that line and toe point from Meryl!

I'm starting to get so anxious and I'm pissed that I have to work next weekend which means I must wait for on demand from icenetwork. Hope they don't take forever making it available. I am off for the weekend of SA, though.

The thing I like about D/W is that they aren't just one hit wonders. Their programs draw the audience in and have that "wow" factor which IMO is very unique and a desirable quality to have in a sport which is more of an art form. I just like the fact that they can combine the athleticism and artistry to make it look so effortless and a joy to watch. Maybe years after they retire, Youtube will be still around and they will be remembered for their amazing programs than just their medal tallies on Wikipedia.

I am looking forward to NHK.

They're usually really good about posting events promptly after they end. When events are in the middle of the night (a la NHK), they're usually posted by the time I wake up in the morning.

    One more week!

When we get closer to nationals, we definitely need to find out who's going to be there and have a D/W fan meet-up.
