The Swedish Let the Right One In was so perfect in its mood-setting, I can't imagine a slick Hollywood remake being anywhere near as good. Plus it's not like horror films are on my "must see" list anyway ... so I doubt very much I'll bother to see it.

The Facebook movie I'll definitely check out eventually (just because I'm such a Sorkin fan), but probably wait til DVD. After all, I was pretty late coming to the Facebook website ... makes sense I wait a while for the movie.

If anything, it was more of a character study about doing business with friends, the sudden trappings of wealth/notoriety at a young age, and how their philosophical differences become more of an issue as the stakes rise.

Now I want to see The Social Network even less! Sounds like Boogie Nights but without the porn or the humor.

TSN could be another Cloverfield ... overhyped and overpraised by the egghead pre-release bloggers*, some who I question have actually seen it, but in the end just good for being different versus "classic, generaion defining". Even if it's "Good" but not great, the huge expectations being created by the early reviews will have whipped up a rabid anticipation that could turn 180 a few days into wide release.

*I never take stock in Rotten Tomato reviewers. They seem to LOVE to be part of the borg ... whether over-rating to "create" a told-you-so hit from nothing, or under-rating to pile onto a film that's supposedly "beneath" their intellect.

Just got back from seeing THE DEVIL and was better than I thought. It was creepy and had me on my toes. Shyamalan did a great job with this one and is back to doing what he does best.

Well, to play DEVIL's advocate, M. Night did not write or direct this movie. The story idea was his, but the writer is Brian Nelson (who wrote Hard Candy and 30 Days of Night). M. Night did co-produce the movie however...with Sam Mercer (Jarhead, Things We Lost In The Fire, Mission To Mars).

I saw Devil yesterday with a friend and we both really liked it. I'm a major Shyamalan fan (have liked every single movie he's done), but my friend said he was disappointed with the dialogue in "Lady In The Water" and "The Happening". (I pressed him to give me something specific about what he didn't like!) My friend felt Shyamalan redeemed himself with this movie, but like I mentioned, he didn't direct or write this movie. So maybe people will give it a chance!

It had some good scares (I saw my friend JUMP in his seat one time!) and the movie held my interest from start to finish. Very well-paced and suspenseful. A great popcorn movie!!

Maybe I'm not describing it correctly. At any rate, Aaron Sorkin wrote the screenplay, so you can count on a lot of witty dialogue. But then, I also thought Juno's dialogue was funny, and most people I know found it obnoxious and overly stylized.

Many people find Sorkin's writing obnoxious and overly stylized, too - it was one of the reasons why Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip was so polarizing and eventually died an early death. I happen to be a Sorkin-worshipper who loved S60 to pieces and was a die-hard fan of The West Wing, but I can see how some people aren't into his writing style.

I saw Never Let Me Go at TIFF and thought it was quite lovely. The book was better - but I find that to be the case 99% of the time when it comes to book-to-movie adaptations.

I agree, I love Never Let Me Go, well, I must since I teach it every semester, and while I enjoyed the film, it just didn't have that beautiful crushing emotion that is so present in the novel.

I have heard really good things about Let Me In. I was skeptical because LTROI is one of my favorite films. I do not buy the reviews that say the American version is better, but I will find out come Friday afternoon.

The 'Top critics' quoted on RT are not paid RT employee or some run of the mill internet nobody. They're legit reviewers from National magazines and newspapers, ie, Time, Newsweek, NY Times, Rolling Stones, etc. I'm sure Roger Ebert is perfectly capable of forming his own opinion and not get caught up in being "part of the borg".

That does look intriguing. I might actually see it. I hadn't really heard of it until this thread.

After watching Martin Sheen & Emilio Estevez on Strombo the other night I'm interested in seeing their new movie, The Way. (BTW, the interview is worth watching just for the story of how Sheen came to the Toront film festival for the movie premier ... and ended up joining a picket line. LOL. Intervew starts at about 9:35. Not sure if it's geoblocked outside of Canada.)

I'm also going to try to check out Barney's Version opening here at the Vancouver film fest. It was my favourite Mordecai Richler novel and the movie was a real labour of love, so I have high hopes for it. Plus Paul Giamatti is I think just about perfect casting for Barney.

I agree, The Social Network was extremely well made. I'm not sure it's a movie I'll want to watch over and over, but it's still one of the best movies I've seen in the last 3 or 4 years.

I'm not 100 percent sure that it was better than Winter's Bone, but it was still fantastic. For some reason, when I first heard about it, I really had no expectation for it to be so good.

I saw Social Network today- it was a very good and well-written movie. At the end of the movie, I didn't dislike Mark Zuckerberg (felt sorry for him..boy, he is lost when it comes to social conversation skills), but Sean Parker (Napster founder) was a total ass in the movie.

I saw Easy A. I liked it, but there was a whole lot of suspension of belief happening in that movie. Though I would like to know how and why they made Amanda Bynes look like Miss Piggy. I know she was supposed to be unlikeable, but man, they didn't need to make her unwatchable. Or maybe they were trying to make her look younger, but all they did IMO was make her look waaay too old to be in high school (which she is, but I think they made her look older than she actually is).

Going to see Social Network tomorrow. Anyone heard anything about Wall Street? I kinda want to see it, but Shia TheBeef makes me want to hurl things at the screen, and I figure other movie patrons might not like that. But I do like Michael Douglass, so I'm torn.

I always find Amanda Bynes unwatchable. I've basically thought she couldn't act her way out of a paper bag since she started on All That.
