It's horrible especially coming after the recent earthquake. My thoughts are with the people affected and pray those trapped can stay alive till rescued.

New Zealand is a beautiful country...I hope the city can recover from this sooner than later.

This article from a writer of the local paper made me tear up. Reminds me of the time around Katrina for me and my family/friends. One of the worst thing about a natural disaster is that communication devices that you take for granted in the modern world goes away and you are left in this void of wondering what is going on:

Not to diminish the seriousness of this thread, but everytime I see your screen name from now on, I'm going to think you're Catherine Middleton, as in soon-to-be Princess Kate.

Awful news. I will be making my donation to the Red Cross.

ETA: ^ this was from some photo captions. I'm sure there is also liquefaction, but some of the water looks pretty clean and pooled.
This registered lower on the Richter Scale than the Haiti quake. But there seems to be so much damage.

In the Northridge Quake there was sever damage around Northridge, and severe damage in Santa Monica (15-18 mile away) and yet some of the intervening areas didn't have a lot of damage. We were told that a lot of it had to do with the type of soils and the shallowness of the quake. The NZ quake was apparently relatively shallow, which tends to cause more damage. I don't know whether the ground under Christchurch is the kind that is subject to liquefaction. (The same problem that caused the awful collapses in the Marina district in the October '89 Loma Prieta earthquake.)

The Grand Chancellor Hotel is where I stayed when I visited Christchurch, Lyttleton, and Canterbury for a few days once. It's now teetering precariously.

That's because it was only 5km from the surface. The deeper the quake less intense the shaking is at ground level.
I guess the hard thing for a lot of people to accept is why God would allow me to go running through their yards, yelling and spinning around.

I've just heard that my NZ friends are safe; they're some distance from Christchurch and are now anxiously waiting for word on family and friends there.
I'd rather be thought of as absolutely ridiculous than as absolutely boring.

A couple of 5.0 and 6.0 earthquakes hit Christchurch again, causing some more property damage, but reportedly no life threatening injuries.
