I've also heard that Jacobsen has quit. SoCal says he's joined the military.

Since there reportedly is no Senior Pairs event at Pacific Coast Sectionals this year, Dobbs/Jacobsen's rumored split may not be confirmed until an official press release is issued and/or their names are removed from the Team C envelope for pairs on the USFS site.

They still must compete, but yes, all three would advance to Nationals.

When they registered for the qualifying season, they had to answer yes/no as to whether they wanted to compete if there were 4 or fewer competitors entered in their event. If at least 2 of them answered yes, then the event is held for those teams who answered yes, even though all of them would be advancing to nationals anyway. Hope that makes sense.

    Per the USFS rulebook:

3134 If any two or more competitors wish to compete in an event with four of fewer competitors, the event will be held. This will not affect the eligibility of the competitors to advance to the next higher competition.

3135 If there are four or fewer competitors in a senior, junior, or novice event at the close of entries, competitors may progress directly to the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

Why are Lorrainne McNamara and Quinn Carpenter competing out west? (I hope this isn't a dumb question)

No, it's not a dumb question. Quite a few Novice/Junior/Senior pair and dance teams pick the Sectional from which they think they may have a better shot to qualify for Nationals. That's why the partners often represent different clubs in different sections. But it can be a guessing game, and not all the Sectional pair and dance teams end up evenly distributed sometimes because coaches and their teams don't always make their intent known to the other teams. If a coach has more than one team in the same event (Carpenter/McNamara, for example), then it's not unusual for the teams to compete in different sections rather than against each other.

Thanks for compiling these lists, Tammi!

The 10/26 edition of the Inside Edge blog by Sarah and Drew confirms and includes quotes from both Dobbs and Jacobsen about their split (scroll down): http://web.icenetwork.com/news/artic...&vkey=ice_news
    An excerpt:
Amanda Dobbs and Joseph Jacobsen, who made such a splash at the 2010 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, recently ended their partnership. A hilarious rumor surfaced on the internet that Jacobsen was going into the military, so we talked to both skaters to set the record straight.

"I'm just taking some time away from competitive skating," Jacobsen said. "I'm going to explore some show skating and I'm more focused on my coaching right now. I'm going to take some time and see how I like more professional-type skating. I'm not saying I'll never go back to competitive skating, I'm definitely open to it because I love skating and I love competing."

He explained the origin of the army rumor. He said a friend had compared skating with a tour to joining the army. "And, I cut my hair really short and the rumor really took off," he said, laughing.

They've been competing senior, so they either didn't pass or based on feedback, decided to skip the test and stay junior.
