For me it was Sixth Sense - SPOILERS:

Unfortunately, I didn't get to enjoy the surprise since my ex-husband spoiled it for me.

I thought the ending of Jacob's Ladder was very intense. It came out long before Sixth Sense, so I was able to guess the ending of Sixth Sense within the first half hour of the movie.

I was hoping to find the ending to Black Widow (1987) with Theresa Russell and Deborah Winger. I did find commentary from Siskel & Ebert about the movie. I agree with Gene Siskel because I was fooled with the ending and I liked the ending.

Tim Robbins in "The Player". I still remember my reaction the first time I saw the end of that movie.

The Graduate. The way he held the camera on them after they'd made their big escape, the uncomfortable uncertainty that enters the picture, was remarkable.

Das Boot - so ironic at the end!

Cinema Paradiso - not shocking, but just so sweet

I have to say that I had my suspicions with Sixth Sense: Bruce Willis' character is shown taking a gunshot wound to the abdomen at close range (was it a shotgun?) and in movies people rarely survive those. That to me was a hint.

Second The English Patient and Before Sunset. I will add A Room With a View, Brokeback Mountain, The Accidental Tourist and Shakespeare In Love on that list of swooney romantic endings.

I am a sucker for movie endings that encompass all the characters in some fashion, i.e. Places In the Heart, Steel Magnolias, Moonstruck, October Sky, Titanic, Sense and Sensibility, Broadcast News.

I also love any movie that tells me whatever happened to each and every character. My favourite is Four Weddings and a Funeral.

    Primal Fear. (Gere, Norton)

I usually can figure out endings easily, well more easilily than anyone else in my family. They often wonder how I got that and my stock answer is I could have written it myself.

But for some reason that one caught me completely by surprise.

    Yes! All -time favorite.

The Crying Game was supposed to be a surprise ending, but I knew immediately. My husband didn't. He was surprised.

The Usual Suspects is another all-time fave. I wish I had the talent to write that well. Acting, photography, direction, art direction.....it all comes back to the script and the writing. If you don't have good writing, you have...oh....the lastest Star Wars episode, or shall I dare say...Avatar? Just lots of pretty and spectacular visuals with nothing on the underneath but heavy handedness.

Agreed 100%, I was completely caught off guard with that ending.

"Derailed" with Clive Owen and Jennifer Aniston had some good twists, too, but I guess we can thank the author of the novel for them. My better-half saw them a mile away but I fell for it.

These endings immediately came to mind when I saw this thread:

    Primal Fear
    The Usual Suspects
    Jacob's Ladder
    Diabolique (the original, or course)
    The Vanishing (again, the original)
