I agree in the case of a Susan Smith or The Manson Family etc... I hope that they do "change", but they do not deserve to walk the streets because of the hideous crimes they have committed.
I used the term "second chance" loosely.
The person I referred to had gone thru rehab 8 times before she finally found the right path. When dealing with bad circumstances, it is very easy to fall into the victim role. When you are psychologically damaged by a parent (my friend, myself & Tonya's case). It can take years to undo the damage to your self esteem and be able to see the mistakes you are making that are keeping you down. When you are told from a very early age you are not good enough, it is easy to believe and let yourself be led down a wicked spiral of bad decisions and actions. You never really know when that one "thing" will happen to turn your life around.
Some people are lucky and find that "something" the first time, some people it takes many times to finally find it, and some people never find it.
I hope this is her "time", especially if there is now a baby involved.

. I realize she has likely matured a lot and changed as an adult but................she just does not strike me as a parenting type?

Ever heard of lions eating there young? Hopefully this kid won't be born with a wad of chewing tobbaco in its mouth.
