    Tragic skaters of the 90s

How bizarre is it that so many skaters of the 90s have such tragic stories?

Nancy Kerrigan- knee whack, brother/father thing...
    Tonya Harding- nuff said.
    Nicole Bobek- drug arrest.
    Angela Nikodinov- mother, coach death
Rudy Galindo- family and coach deaths
    Oksana Baiul- drunken car crashes
    Chris Bowman- everything
    Lisa Ervin- eating disorder
    Sergei Grinkov

And probably more I can't think of right now. It it just me or were skaters of the 90s particularly prone to tragedy?

Liz Punsalan (of Punsalan & Swallow). Between 1994 US Nationals and the Olympics, Didn't her brother murder her father?

    You forgot Sergei Ponomarenko !
But skaters of the 2000's are equally as tragic ! Remember Nobu Oda, Maxim Staviski, Joannie Rochette...

From the 90s to now, also adding Tanja Szweczenko, Elena Berezhnaya, Tatiana Totmianina, Irina Slutskaya, Andrei Lutai, Haley Gans, I know I'm forgetting more.

I think maybe you just heard more about the tragic stories, since FS was more popular then?

I think haribobo is just discussing the 90s, not anyone who fits into the tragic description

I think that the skating world is so small that the collection of tragedies seems much larger than it really is. Also, I think equating the tragedies that some skaters made of their lives (Harding, Bowman, etc.) with the loss of loved ones (Angela, Nancy) isn't fair.

Angela Nikodinov's mother on the way to nats. Remember Goebel skating and barely being able to keep it together

    Agree completely.

    What else was popular?
    Mass media, internet.
Dissemination of PR & news releases.
interest in figure skating, access to info re: celebrities lives, athletes lives,.

Everyone's lives were always sad. And happy.

Some place competitive and athletic, but ultimately more like an audition than anything else.

I think it's not a disproportionate amount of "tragedy" from that time frame. I mean, some of the events you're talking about have happened 15-20 years post "the 90s". If out of the hundreds of skaters who skated during that decade, bad things happen to 20 of them, I don't think it is any more different than any other group of people in a similar time frame (i.e., graduating classes from school, etc)

Ok so it isn't as bad as what the other skaters when through, but it's still something.

I dont think it made any difference as far as her not winning. She didnt fall on a simple double axel in the short because of a cold and that would have already been enough to ensure her not winning the Championships, and she ended up managing 2nd anyway.

Yuri Larionov - caught w/ steroids and banned for 1 or 2? years
Andrei Lutai - arrested and charged with stealing a car I think?
And, didnt Oksana Domnina's mother commit suicide?
