Savchenko/Szolkowy had a press conference on monday. Some news:

    http://www.mdr.de/mdr-info/sport/audio680238.html (audio clip in German).

Aljona thinks the new nutcracker program is the best program they ever had. They can, must and want to skate it to perfection. Robin really enjoyed working with David Wilson. He liked the fact that David could relate to both the male and female part of the choreo. Ingo Steuer thinks the short program music ‘When winter comes’ by André Rieu is really something special. They obviously want the olympic gold. They will retire with 95% certainty.

Throw triple axel will be part of both the short and long program. These programs are the best, but most difficult programs they ever had. They will have their own ice show ‘Imagine on ice’ in Chemnitz in April. It will be a spectacular show with music, dance and special effects. Other skaters include Florent Amodio and Totmianina / Marinin.

Thank you, la.louise! They really sound determined and are not too intimidated about V/T´s Skate America scores. I really really hope there will be an incredible fight about the Olympic gold.

If I was them, I'd be feeling defeated already.

Oh well at least a silver medal would still be an improvement over Vancouver.

Ha ha, but Robin and Aliona would not be 4-time World champions nor even two-time Olympians if "feeling defeated" by a rival team's programs/ marks was ever something that occurred to them to think about feeling. "Defeat" does not seem to be part of their vocabulary. They always go full steam ahead, work hard and challenge themselves to do their absolute best. With Ingo's help Robin and Aliona have been the pairs champions to beat and to emulate for many seasons.

Tatiana learned a great deal training with S/S under Ingo's tutelage. Max and Tat are a great match together and they're trying to notch it up a level this season. They're looking good and we know the judges are squarely in their corner, but they still have a ways to go ... OTOH, even if the odds are against Robin and Aliona being rewarded with Olympic gold, I doubt that not winning the elusive prize will make them feel defeated. I think it's a triumph they're still able to go for the gold.

Great speech but when V/T get high 9s and 10s for a safe, generic and quite empty program, then S/S might not as well bother.

V/T will face so much pressure - (heavy?) favourites in their home Olympics. Funny things could happen in that scenario.

    S/S still have a chance - it's slim, but it's there.

Does this mean that they are deciding whether to waive the requirements for her to compete in singles, or whether to waive the requirements to allow her to skate the Team Event? If the latter, then Lithuania would move from first on the alternates list to the Ladies individual event.

I hope they send her. The German NOC (DOSB) has a history of being stingy about requirments, rather opting to send fewer than more athletes. Considering how close she missed the norm, that she secured the spot at Worlds, and that she's needed for the team event anyway, it's pretty much a no-brainer.
