Just wanted to quickly add my 100% agreement with this. Her jump technique flaws aside, this performance saved that Olys. It was pure magic and thank goodness the judges found a way to give her the gold--she deserved it.

I agree with you. Even though many people won't consider Sarah among their favorite skaters, her FP at that competition was astounding. I found it especially inspiring because of how calm and collected she was approaching the program, despite being an underdog and in 4th place.

I thought gold should have gone to Irina though, since Sarah's SP should have been lower than 4th.
Please don't make this into the who should have won the 2002 Olympics thread...

If you look at the way the judges scored the ladies LP, half of the judging pannel was not trying to do her any favors. The ordinals are totally shady. The judges were not trying to find a way to do anything-she just ended up winning. Michelle was the only skater on the podium who's ordinals made any sense.

Kwan Concerto de Aranjuez 03 Worlds
    Kwan Tosca 04 US Nationals
    Butylskaya Otonal 99 Worlds
    Slutskaya Wonderland 05 Worlds

As you can see, I have a soft spot for mature ladies capping off their careers with wonderful performances.
I was especially moved by Irina 05 by not only she overcame illness and slump to become the champion again, but did it in immense pressure from adoring home crowd.
She later said she cried all day after a mediocre SP because she felt so much pressure.

'Butterfly Lovers'. A quite exquisite performance.
Be with me always—take any form—drive me mad! only do not leave me in this abyss, where I cannot find you! Oh, God! it is unutterable! I cannot live without my life! I cannot live without my soul!"

I really had never seen Peggy in her prime until that skate. She is easily one of the most gifted skaters the sport has ever seen. After watching that performance I truly understood why Peggy is such a beloved figure in the sport.
