Of course, if people could just put their biases against Calgary and the Stampede away for a few minutes, and give something new a chance...

If I am still living here I am definitely going to check it out....and I will drag all my skating and non-skating friends along.

And of course, I will also give y'all a review afterwards

I've heard that's no longer happening.

It certainly will expose figure skating to new demographics. The Stampede is the largest rodeo in the world and brings 1 million visitors to Calgary every July. Every show I've seen at Stampede has been world-class, but given the high cheese factor most non-competitive skating shows have, I'll be going into this as a skeptic. I'm sure it will be entertaining, but it won't necessarily be a good representation of the *sport* of figure skating, whereas the other shows and demos at Stampede are great representations of their field. I might be a bit more optimistic once a cast list is out...

Do you mean Skate Canada headquarters or an event? The only thing left to give out was the Worlds bid, right?

Skate Canada headquarters. Last I heard, the move to Calgary is off.

If you can have figure skaters performing on cruise ships & in theme parks over the summer why not the Calgary Stampede? I live in Montana & rodeos are a big part of entertainment in the western states & provinces. I watch the chuck wagon races faithfully on my TV every July from the Stampede.

One of the issues, I think, is that figure skating has become defined a little narrowly, which I suspect has something to do with the decline of it.

Many different approaches and aesthetics can be and should be explored and presented in figure skating. Programs could emphasize athleticism for competition or, if necesssary, contain it in order to achieve certain effects for gala/ice show. They can do ballet, modern dance emphasizing self-expression, jazz dance, square dance, etc., and skate to whatever music including blue-grass as long as done creatively and enjoyably.

Of course, the trick is to correctly identify the aesthetics of the target audience and accordingly make figure skating more palatable to them. I mean, the success of it depends more on creativity, artistic and business-wise, than on the nature of figure skating IMO.

...and new events like a three times daily Rock 'n Roll Ice Show, which will feature another couple of homegrown Olympic heroes, ice dancing gold medallists Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir.
Whoa -- an ice show that's 3 times daily for more than a week?

According to the Stampede program, (which I received today in the mail), the times are as follows:
    July 8: 7:30 p.m.
    July 9: 2, 5, and 7:30 p.m.
    Additional Shows: July 11, 13 and 14 at 10 a.m.

Calgary Herald article (July 8): http://www.calgaryherald.com/travel/...megadrop_story
New this year is a rock 'n' roll ice show -- starring figure skater Elvis Stojko and Vaughn Chipeur -- as well as fiery high divers and equine entertainment with super-sized Clydesdale and Percheron horses.

Think of the costumes and props one could use! They could dress up as cowgirl/boy and dance to a western theme that covers all the other activities in an ice interpretation, they could pretend shearing, stepping into manure, riding a horse, roping calves all on ice etc.

The whole thing sounds crazy -- figure skating, laser show, aerial acrobatics, and now sheep shearing all in one place? I'd think I was on an acid trip....
well, the audience is likely to have had a lot of beer..............

That's the other nice smell - spilled, stale beer.

I chuckled at the Calgary Herald article when I read it this morning. It must have been written by someone who isn't a skating fan. The writer mentions Elvis Stojko, and Vaughn Chipeur (presumably because he trains in Calgary) but not the reigning world and Olympic ice dance champions, from Canada.

It's a bit of an oversight, to say the least. However, when I consider how well-researched some of their articles on the oil and gas industry (my area of expertise) are, it's not surprising that some of their articles about skating would be equally poorly researched.

Sounds similar to the ice show that Elvis skated in at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto last summer, with Maxime-Billy Fortin as well. It was twice daily, and included aerial acts and acrobatics as well as skating.
