'Archie' Comics to Introduce Gay Character

    http://www.cnn.com/2010/SHOWBIZ/book...ex.html?hpt=C2

Riverdale High School, the stomping ground of comic book legend Archie Andrews, will open its doors to its first openly gay student.

Kevin Keller will be the new student to join Archie, Jughead, Veronica, Betty and Reggie, Archie Comics publications announced Thursday.
Funny, I always thought that Ethel was gonna come out .

Why, it's Veronika of all people .
(You know Veronica is a character from the strip).

I think Jughead and Ethel are the same person. But that is a whole other issue.

This thread brought to mind the scene in Chasing Amy about Archie being a "sister"

My username partly comes from Archie...but I look a lot more like Betty IRL.

And see, Betty was my fave 'cause she was so nice, but always such a victim. Like the way I used to be.

But OT, I want to see if they will give him a romance, or is he gonna be the token gay character with no sex life, only there to provide wisecracks or help Betty and Veronica with their love lives and shopping and stuff.

I'd read that the creator of 'Archie' was rather religious, so I find this very interesting

There are many people who are pro-gay and religious.

    Agreed.

I just recalled as a kid back in the 1970s that 'Archie' comics were featured prominently at these Jesus Fairs [religious Woodstocks, if you will] that my parents used to attend and the Archie comic-book author was pretty 'out' and resolute in his religious beliefs at a time when gays carried a big 'ick' factor. I guess in my mind that is why I found it quite interesting he is featuring a gay character, and in my mind I probably wrongly linked his religiosity to an anti-gay position.
