What has been done in your "honor" today!

Actually, they didn't do anything in the office where I work. Never mind that my current responsibilities combine both my my job and those of the receptionist, who has been out for a solid year on disability. I also am the back-up person for Accounts Payable and the Billing/Shipping clerk and, last Friday, I had to cover both of those positions in addition to my own, because AP had the day off scheduled, and B/S called in sick.

So, hey, I am satisfied that, if I left, it would take a lot of digging for them to find another employee who is as capable as I am. If they can't appreciate that, well then...

That's OK, I'm taking Friday off, to use up some of my Personal time.

Actually, the term "secretary" has gone the way of "stewardess". Most are referred to as Administrative Assistants.

Actually, the term "secretary" has gone the way of "stewardess". Most are referred to as Administrative Assistants. We're called Support Staff in my organization. Whatever...I still call myself a secretary.

Me too! We're 'administrative assistants' at my company but I still say "secretary" when people ask what I do. What's funny is just recently the girl who cuts my hair asked what do you do as a secretary ... and I'm like uh, I don't know! I just do what they tell me!

The end of my 'fleeing the lunch' story:

Came back from dropping off work (and granola ) to a take out dessert dropped off by the boss. Sent boss an email thanking her and got this reply "If you have any left, I'll take it." Gave her the whole thing. Some days, she really is clueless.

They're all nuts here, but in a good way.

I actually received a 'real present' today. Someone I help out a lot gave me a very nice apple scented candle. So far, she hasn't asked to light it or taken any of the wax back, so I'm hopeful this is really mine.

Oh, and tent lady will be getting the thing back today. What's funny about it is that I've given her a lot of NEW stuff over the years (dresses, skirts, perfume) that I didn't need or use. Guess I'll be cutting off the freebies?

Don't feel bad, I completely forgot about Boss's Day last October

I don't like Boss's Day. I feel Bosses are appreciated everytime they get paid 4x more than me. And really when is "non-support staff, non-managerial worker day"? Why does no one appreciate me.

That said - I do think Administrative Professionals Day is important. Our support staff work really really hard, and unlike my complaint with bosses day, most of them aren't paid more than me (some are). And in my company almost every support staff position is filled by someone way overqualified.

We still have secretary (and secretary II, III) but not all of our administrative professionals are secretaries. Secretaries serve one person- usually a VP or higher, above that we have Specialists (I, II, II) that serve many people (including managers, but also just boring exempt staff) and below secretary we have clerks (also I, II, III)

Whatever it is, it is a good excuse for cake at work.

Yes, I think the name was changed from that to encompass more staff, such as clerks, office managers, etc. They didn't want to be left out of the celebrations!

I think Hallmark changed it so they can sell more greeting cards...

Hey, I could get paid as much as my boss... if I go back to school and study to be a CPA, that is.

The person who I really have respect for is the president/owner of the company I work for, my Big Boss. He hasn't pulled a paycheck since March of last year, because he wants to make sure that we, his employees, get paid.

The way the day is handled is pretty much at the discretion of the employer. Most acknowledge it - it is a good retention tool.

DH is self-employed with 2 adminis. He could not do anything for them that day as he had appointments all afternoon. Ordinarily he takes them to lunch and drinks all afternoon. Not this year. He said he wasn't going to now because of the following:

One of them was talking on the phone with her husband and asked him (my husband, their boss) if he wouldn't mind answering the other line that was ringing! He was appalled, and they had acted bitchy all day because he was busy working so he could sign their paychecks.

So its Friday night, they kill the air on the weekends at my place .... should you take the cut flower arrangments home with you or leave on your desk since its a gift from your boss, so you should leave at work? Or is it appropriate to take home and your boss won't think you are being rude or anything by taking them home? I never know what to do year to year about the flowers. I don't know how well they will survive the weekend since I know they kill the air.

I decided against getting flowers for my secretary this year because they died almost instantly after she received them, and they were really expensive to order and have delivered! So I gave her a spa giftcard instead. This way she can get a mani-pedi on the weekend of her choice, or buy beauty products. She seemed pleased with it.

I love when my bosses buy me spa certificates! I was given 7 of them last Christmas! Other than the deep tissue massages I get every month (covered by my benefits), I never get around to treating myself with a day of pampering. Not that deep tissue massages are enjoyable anyway...

It is a great gift, as long as you know for sure that the giftee enjoys such things. If I got the gift it would never be used. I have gotten so many gifts over the years that were great gifts...for somebody else.
