Wow. That she was a conservative playing Julia Sugarbaker is impressive. Totally felt she was real in that character. Finding out Bea Arthur was a conservative while playing Maude would only be more shocking.
    What would Jenny do?

I don't think you'll find that, at least from the interviews I've seen.

Bea Arthur is about as liberal as you can get in Hollywood. Outside of television was in Mame, two of the most liberal leads ever in a broadway show (which is saying alot).

What was so liberal about the Julia Sugarbaker character? I probably didn't see every episode but...

Very liberal and very feminist too.

I lurved the episode where she battled the newsstand owner that kept selling those pornographic magazines - she kept running his stand over with her car

Oh yeah. Like I said, some of the episodes were hysterical. The Clarence Thomas episode was somewhat preachy, but Dixie made a good Joan Crawford when she and Mary Jo were doing the "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" play in the episode.

RIP Dixie and my condolences go out to Hal and the rest of her family.

My biggest memory of Dixie was from Designing Women even though she has done much more than that.
I just saw her on some obscure commercial a couple of days ago, maybe this was it, and was thinking how thin she looked. RIP. I'm very sorry to hear it, that is too young to go.

Supposedly she was a health nut who injected herself with HGH, or so I've been told.

She was brilliant as Maria Callas in McNally's "Master Class".

Thanks to her portrayal of Brandy Henderson on "The Edge of Night" during the 1970s, I wanted to be a district attorney when I was a teenager. RIP.

That's where I first remember seeing her, as well.
She also appeared with Joseph Papp's Shakespeare Festival.
