And now the media can happily print "openly gay singer Rickey Martin ...." every time he is mentioned in print. Apparently it is an important descriptor.

It is important to some people, but I don't think the press will say that EVERY time they printed something about him anyway. They don't do it with other out celebs. They don't say "lesbian talk show host Elled de Generes" or "gay actor Neil Patrick Harris". Especially after the initial hoopla dies down.

Maybe I'm a less cynical person in general, but I don't see coming out as something you do for promotion reasons, especially when a lot of your fans are Latino, who are mostly Catholic. I see it as something you do when you're ready to do it, promotion or not.

I'm Latino, and while I'd agree that being gay is very hard in Latin America overall, the reaction about Ricky Martin has mostly been in the "oh yeah, knew that already" category. Most people assumed he was gay.
