What about moving Jay earlier in the evening? Why does he have to be on at nine? Although I just don't think a talk show like is going to work in the early evening, and I like Jay. Sometimes, I just watch his monologue, and then switch to something else, though, unless I like the guest. But I always turn back to NBC for the local news. They are the only crew here who aren't morons.

I've got to chime in & add my own "Good for Conan!" He's being pushed around by those cowards at NBC & I'm glad to see he's not going to stand for it.

Or put him on one of the NBC cable channels, like Bravo?

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over "The Tonight Show" in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers,...
What could be a more lucrative offer than the Tonight Show? (aside from becoming BFF with Oprah, resulting in your own syndicated show)

He probably meant financially lucrative. He makes it very clear the level of prestige he believes The Tonight Show holds in American popular culture.

So, what other entertainment/comedy show scenarios would he be referring to? Was he offered an unbelievable deal by Fox, for example, the other year? Comedy Central? HBO?

I don't know what his current salary is, but he was paid $8 million a year near the end of his Late Night gig.

    http://www.usatoday.com/life/televis...-26-obrien.htm

    Just wondering .

I also assume Leno and O'Brien have different agents, trying to get the best deal for his client, too .

ETA: $20 million a year. Good for him!

It' s not like NBC plan to cancel 'The Tonight Show'. Conan and his staff still have have that spot if they want it. I don't buy the argument that 'The Tonight Show' at 12am is no longer 'The Tonight Show'. This is more about Conan's ego talking. I do understand Conan's frustration, anger, etc. but in the grand scheme of thing, so what if his show got moved.

Ego? I'm not sure. I feel Conan has a valid point. A show that starts at 12:05 AM is not the tonight show, and NBC does not need another hour of Today. I don't know how this will work out, but it seems NBC is comfortable being in last place again. They let solid scripted shows go for a money-saving experiment that just didn't work out. Oh well.

I now worship Conan O'Brien! He sat for 6 years, he uprooted his family and staff (and their families) to LA from NY on the promise of getting "The Tonight Show" and now he's got to watch some prima donna jerk the network around? Awesome statement, very well written and on the beginning "people of earth" and end "hair" comment.

I grew up watching Johnny Carson and remember the debacle when he retired and Jay took over - Jay never even acknowledged Carson in his first show. Good riddance to Jay. Never liked him after that classless act. Too bad NBC didn't keep Letterman and send Jay packing all those years ago.

I took it to mean he had turned down offers when he was hosting the Late Show, that paid more than he was making at that time, but he stuck with the Late Show and put in his time at NBC in order to move up to the Tonight Show down the line. Possibly he was referring specifically to the 5 years between when he was named as Tonight Show successor and when he got to take over, as I'm sure his stock went up a lot during those years and there would have been plenty of places that would have loved to have gotten their hands on him.

According to TMZ, NBC plans to put Leno back on the Tonight Show. Conan plans to leave the network for Fox?

I am reading this from ONTD.

Chiming in to echo you. Shame on NBC - they're treating him very, very badly! :wags finger: Of course I'm not and have never been a Leno fan, so that's coloring things a bit, but, seriously, Conan waited his turn patiently for YEARS, just to get shat on like this? Tisk, tisk. I have to confess that I do think that Craig Ferguson is funnier than both of them, tbh

    Good on Conan!

Princess is correct - our local NBC station has the only crew who aren't morons.

I like both Jay and Conan and wish them the best.

I disagree with those who said Jay wanted to retire and changed his mind. I don't think he ever wanted to retire. NBC forced his hand. He agreed to leave The Tonight Show after a set number of years so they could keep Conan because Conan had been shopping around to take his show elsewhere back then. But I think Jay wasn't happy about it. And when it was time for the switchover Jay's ratings were so good still that NBC didn't want him to leave. But they already promised Conan the show so they went with the 10 O'Clock idea because now other networks were looking at doing a show with Jay and now they didn't want to lose him.

It's all so ironic. It all started because there was talk of Conan going to another network and NBC didn't want to lose him. And now it looks like that will be what happens after all. If they just let him go back then, they could've saved not only a lot of money, but a lot of bad press.

I'm not a Conan fan at all, but I agree with him on this and I don't think Jay comes off looking so good.

Conan did his time in the after midnight spot for years, giving up alternative earlier shows elsewhere. That helped with Jay's ratings by keeping down the competition, and now NBC has screwed him over. If Jay wanted to come back at 11:30, he should have gone to Fox.

Jay may be walking away from NBC as well.

    http://www.popeater.com/2010/01/13/j...leaving-nbc%2F

I'd find it odd if Jay thought he could just waltz back into his old time slot without a *real and sincere* sign of approval from Conan.

I'm guessing NBC will be trying to work this thing out to both their satisfaction during the Olympics. (NBC, don't mess with the Olympics!)

OMG, did you see Jimmy Kimmel act and look like Jay Leno throughout his entire show?!

I saw the first half of the Tonight Show, too. Conan's jokes and timing were on fire!
